Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. And 6% say it was never possible, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey of 8,709 U.S. adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While this is the first time the Center has asked about the American dream in this way, other surveys have long found that sizable shares of Americans are skeptical about the <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2014\/06\/04\/news\/economy\/american-dream\/index.html\">future of the American dream<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"who-believes-the-american-dream-is-still-possible\">Who believes the American dream is still possible?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are relatively modest differences in views of the American dream by race and ethnicity, partisanship, and education. About two-thirds of adults ages 65 and older (68%) say this, as do 61% of those 50 to 64.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By comparison, only about four-in-ten adults under 50 (42%) say it\u2019s still possible for people to achieve the American dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"income\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Income<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higher-income Americans are also more likely than others to say the American dream is still achievable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While 64% of upper-income Americans say the American dream still exists, 39% of lower-income Americans say the same \u2013 a gap of 25 percentage points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Middle-income Americans fall in between, with a 56% majority saying the American dream is still possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"race-and-ethnicity\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Race and ethnicity<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly half of Americans in each racial and ethnic group say the American dream remains possible. And while relatively few Americans \u2013 just 6% overall \u2013 say that the American dream was never possible, Black Americans are about twice as likely as those in other groups to say this (11%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"partisanship\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Partisanship<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While 56% of Republicans and Republican leaners say the American dream is still possible to achieve, 50% of Democrats and Democratic leaners say the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"education\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Education<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 57% majority of adults with a bachelor\u2019s degree or more education say the American dream remains possible, compared with 50% of those with less education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"age-and-income-differences-within-both-parties\">Age and income differences within both parties<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=179987\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f5f4f4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/07\/SR_24.07.02_american-dream_3.png?resize=480,496 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/07\/SR_24.07.02_american-dream_3.png?resize=782,808 782w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/07\/SR_24.07.02_american-dream_3.png?resize=840,868 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"661\" width=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/07\/SR_24.07.02_american-dream_3.png?w=640\" alt=\"A dot plot showing that, in both parties, lower-income, younger adults are less likely to say the American dream is still possible.\" class=\"wp-image-179987 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f5f4f4; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Age and income differences in views of the American dream persist within each political party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"age\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Age<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clear majorities of both Republicans (64%) and Democrats (67%) ages 50 and older say achieving the American dream is still possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, just 38% of Democrats under 50 and 48% of Republicans under 50 view the American dream as still possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"income\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Income<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In both parties, upper-income Americans are about 25 points more likely than lower-income Americans to say it is still possible for people to achieve the American dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"do-people-think-they-can-achieve-the-american-dream\">Do people think they can achieve the American dream?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans are also divided over whether they think they personally can achieve the American dream. About three-in-ten (31%) say they\u2019ve achieved it, while a slightly larger share (36%) say they are on their way to achieving it. Another 30% say it\u2019s out of reach for them. But Democrats are somewhat more likely than Republicans to say they\u2019re on the way to achieving it (38% vs. 34%). Democrats are also more likely than Republicans to view the American dream as personally out of reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"income-and-age\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Income and age<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Older and higher-income Americans are more likely than younger and less wealthy Americans to say they have achieved or are within reach of the American dream.
