Ahead of the election, Britons see the state of the UK in relatively bleak terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No major political party receives a favorable rating from a majority of the British public. Few think the nation\u2019s economy is in good shape. And people are more dissatisfied than satisfied with the state of democracy in their country, according to a Pew Research Center survey of 1,o17 British adults, conducted Jan. 11-March 9, 2024. The survey is weighted to be representative of the adult population in the UK with the following variables: gender, age, education, region and probability of selection of respondent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/SR_24.06.20_uk-election_topline.pdf\">questions used for this analysis<\/a>, along with responses, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/methods\/feature\/international-methodology\/all-survey\/all-country\/all-year\/\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"views-of-several-major-political-parties-have-become-more-negative-in-recent-years\">Views of several major political parties have become more negative in recent years<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of the four major British political parties we asked about in our survey \u2013 the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats, the Conservative Party and Reform UK \u2013 receive net positive ratings from the British public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=179083\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f2f2f1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"1012\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/SR_24.06.20_uk-election_1.png?resize=480,783 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/SR_24.06.20_uk-election_1.png?resize=620,1012 620w\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/SR_24.06.20_uk-election_1.png?w=620\" alt=\"A line chart showing that views of major UK political parties have become more negative in recent years.\" class=\"wp-image-179083 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f2f2f1; width:310px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Labour Party is seen most favorably at 47%, though this is down somewhat from 54% favorable last year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Liberal Democrats get positive ratings from around four-in-ten Britons (38%). Again, this is down from 48% last year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Conservative Party, which has governed the UK since 2010, is broadly unpopular. Only around three-in-ten British adults (29%) have a favorable view of the governing party. While largely unchanged since last year, views of the Tories are less positive than in 2021 and 2020, when about four-in-ten Britons saw them favorably.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The only party that enjoys more favorable ratings now than in the recent past is Reform UK, formerly the Brexit Party. While only 31% have a favorable view of the party led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/article\/2024\/jun\/04\/farage-the-maverick-who-inflamed-uks-brexit-vote-is-back-to-haunt-rightwing-allies\">Nigel Farage<\/a>, this is up 8 percentage points since 2022. This is up 7 points since last year and has nearly doubled since the fall of 2020, when 19% had unfavorable views of both of the country\u2019s dominant parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By way of comparison, this is also higher than the 28% of Americans who had <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2023\/09\/19\/the-republican-and-democratic-parties\/\">unfavorable views of both the Republican and Democratic parties<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"most-who-identify-with-conservative-or-labour-parties-see-their-own-party-favorably\">Most who identify with Conservative or Labour parties see their own party favorably<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the UK, people who identify with the Conservative Party are, unsurprisingly, more likely to have a favorable view of the party (74%) than those who identify with Labour (13%) or who say they do not feel close to any party (25%). But even among people who identify as Conservatives, the share who have a favorable view of their party has fallen in recent years. In 2020, 89% had a positive view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Labour Party supporters, for their part, are more likely than Conservatives to have a positive view of their own party: 87% do. And the share who feel this way has been largely consistent in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"only-about-1-in-5-say-the-uk-s-economic-situation-is-good\">Only about 1 in 5 say the UK\u2019s economic situation is good<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few in the UK (22%) think their country\u2019s economy is in good shape. With 78% saying it\u2019s in poor shape, Britons are more negative about their country\u2019s economy than people in <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/06\/07\/economic-ratings-across-34-countries-are-more-negative-than-positive\/\">most of the other countries we surveyed this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conservative Party supporters (27%) are more likely than Labour Party supporters (18%) to think the economy is in good shape \u2013 as is often the case with members of a country\u2019s governing party or coalition, according to our research. As recently as 2021, 60% of British adults were satisfied with their democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conservative Party supporters are more likely than Labour Party supporters to be satisfied with democracy in their country (55% vs. 40%). Once again, we\u2019ve found this is <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/06\/18\/satisfaction-with-democracy-has-declined-in-recent-years-in-high-income-nations\/\">common for supporters of a country\u2019s governing party<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Conservative Party supporters are much less satisfied today than they were a few years ago, when around three-quarters or more were happy with the way democracy was working in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: Here are the <a
