The U.S. birth rate dipped in 2011 to the lowest ever recorded, led by a plunge in births to immigrant women since the onset of the Great Recession.<\/p>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"32\" height=\"33\"><\/figure>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-246873\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2013\/05\/smart-moms.png\" alt=\"smart moms\" width=\"438\" height=\"454\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today&#8217;s mothers have more education than ever before, according to a new Pew Research Center <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2013\/05\/10\/record-share-of-new-mothers-are-college-educated\/%20\">analysis<\/a> of Census data.\u00a0\u00a0About\u00a0<strong>two-thirds<\/strong>\u00a0of new mothers in 2011 had at least some college education, reflecting\u00a0a decades-long rise in the educational levels of all women.<\/p>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"32\" height=\"33\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2010, the average age of first-time mothers was\u00a0<b>25.4<\/b>, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr61\/nvsr61_01.pdf\">National Center for Health Statistics<\/a>. Age at first birth has been trending upward for a long time; in 1980 the average age was 22.7.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"32\" height=\"33\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0Between paid and unpaid work, the average mother works about\u00a0<b>2<\/b>\u00a0more hours a week than she did in 1965, \u00a0though the mix of time spent on paid work, housework and child care has changed dramatically:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2013\/03\/14\/modern-parenthood-slideshow\/modernparenthood-slideshow_002\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/03\/ModernParenthood-slideshow_002.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"375\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"32\" height=\"33\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though 56% of working mothers say it\u2019s very or somewhat difficult to balance work and family responsibilities,\u00a0<b>78%<\/b>\u00a0say they\u2019re doing an \u201cexcellent\u201d or \u201cvery good\u201d job as parents.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2013\/03\/14\/modern-parenthood-slideshow\/modernparenthood-slideshow_010\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/03\/ModernParenthood-slideshow_010.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"376\"><\/a><\/figure>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>52.9% of women aged 15-44, or about 32.5 million, were mothers in 2010, according to the Census Bureau.
