{"id":16132,"date":"2013-05-30T00:01:46","date_gmt":"2013-05-30T05:01:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/%year%\/%monthnum%\/%day%\/internet-adoption-becomes-nearly-universal-among-some-groups-but-others-lag-behind\/"},"modified":"2024-04-13T23:41:10","modified_gmt":"2024-04-14T04:41:10","slug":"internet-adoption-becomes-nearly-universal-among-some-groups-but-others-lag-behind","status":"publish","type":"short-read","link":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2013\/05\/30\/internet-adoption-becomes-nearly-universal-among-some-groups-but-others-lag-behind\/","title":{"rendered":"Internet adoption becomes nearly universal among some groups, but others lag behind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New data from the latest survey by the <a href=\"http:\/\/pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/\">Pew Research Center\u2019s Internet Project<\/a> in the spring shows that 85% of Americans adults use the internet at least occasionally. \u00a0Five years ago, in an April 2008 survey, 73% of adults used the internet.\u00a0 Ten years ago, in May 2003, 63% of adults used the internet.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some groups have reached nearly universal adoption:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>98% of those ages 18-29 use the internet<\/li>\n<li>96% of those who are college graduates use the internet<\/li>\n<li>96% of those living in households earning $75,000 or more use the internet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more-->At the same time, those ages 65 and older, Hispanics, those living in households earning less than $30,000, those without high school diplomas, and those living in rural areas are not as likely as others in the adult population to use the internet.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2013\/05\/FT_demographics-internet-users.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-247572 aligncenter\" alt=\"FT_demographics-internet-users\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2013\/05\/FT_demographics-internet-users.png\" width=\"513\" height=\"830\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the other findings in the spring survey about internet use:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A majority of those ages 65 and older (56%) use the internet. It has been about a year since senior citizens cracked the 50% threshold for internet adoption.<\/li>\n<li>Mobile connectivity through smartphones and tablet computers only adds 2% of unique internet users to the overall population. At the same time, we have reported from previous surveys that a portion of mobile device users are \u201ccell mostly\u201d \u2013 that is, they do most of their internet browsing through a mobile device.\u00a0We are doing more analysis of these new data to determine new levels of \u201ccell mostly\u201d activity and will report on them in the coming weeks. Last year, we reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/Reports\/2012\/Cell-Internet-Use-2012\/Key-Findings.aspx\">31% of internet users are \u201ccell internet users\u201d (those who use their phones to go online) and 17% of all cell phone users are cell mostly<\/a>. We also reported that <a href=\"http:\/\/pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/Reports\/2013\/Teens-and-Tech\/Summary-of-Findings.aspx\">25% of teens are cell mostly<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Parents of minor children are significantly more likely than non-parents to be internet users (93% vs. 81%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most Americans ages 18 and older use the
