Those dads cared for an estimated 369,000 children.<\/p>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"32\" height=\"33\"><\/figure>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/03\/SDT-2013-03-Modern-Parenthood-27.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"656\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fathers have nearly tripled the amount of time they spend with their children, from 2.5 hours in 1965 to <strong>7.3 hours per week<\/strong> in 2011, according to a Pew Research <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2013\/03\/14\/modern-parenthood-roles-of-moms-and-dads-converge-as-they-balance-work-and-family\/5\/\">report<\/a> that analyzed years of time-use data. Despite that increase, 46% of fathers said they spent too little time with their children, compared with 23% of mothers who said the same; half of dads said they spent the right amount of time.<\/p>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"32\" height=\"33\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2009 there were about <strong>2.4 million<\/strong> custodial fathers (that is, raising their children while the mother was living elsewhere), versus 11.2 million custodial mothers, according to a Census Bureau\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2011pubs\/p60-240.pdf\">report<\/a>. About 619,000 custodial fathers were due child support; collectively, they received about $1.9 billion.<\/p>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"32\" height=\"33\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\">More than <strong>three-quarters of new fathers<\/strong> took one week or less off from work after the birth or adoption of their most recent child, according to a 2011 Boston College\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bc.edu\/content\/dam\/files\/centers\/cwf\/pdf\/FH-Study-Web-2.pdf\">study<\/a>\u00a0of fathers\u00a0at four large companies;\u00a016% didn&#8217;t take any time off at all. Most new mothers at the same companies took anywhere from six to 12 weeks off. Of those who took time off, 92% of fathers said they had a positive experience being with their child during that time.<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-247929 aligncenter responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/father-time-off1.png\" alt=\"father time off\" width=\"638\" height=\"419\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"32\" height=\"33\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forget the ties, &#8220;World&#8217;s Best Dad&#8221; T-shirts and other clothing clich\u00e9s: According to a 2012 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipsos-na.com\/news-polls\/pressrelease.aspx?id=5655\">poll<\/a> from market-research firm Ipsos, most dads would prefer to either spend quality time with their families on Father&#8217;s Day (40%) or receive no gift at all (22%).
