High School ripped up his prepared graduation speech, which had been approved by school officials, and instead recited the Lord\u2019s Prayer at the public school\u2019s graduation ceremony. <a href=\"http:\/\/religion.blogs.cnn.com\/2013\/06\/06\/hear-what-valedictorian-said-for-cheers\/\">According to CNN<\/a>, Roy Costner IV said he was trying to make a statement that \u201ctaking prayer out of schools is the worst thing we could do.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has been more than 50 years since the Supreme Court ruled in <i>Engel v. Vitale<\/i> (1962) that school-sponsored prayer in public schools <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/Church-State-Law\/Religion-in-the-Public-Schools(2).aspx\">violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment<\/a>, and more than 20 years since the high court decided in <i>Lee v. Weisman<\/i> (1992) that public schools may not sponsor or promote prayer at graduation ceremonies. But as the incident in South Carolina illustrates, the controversy over prayer in school has not diminished.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2012\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/Politics-and-Elections\/Little-Voter-Discomfort-with-Romney%E2%80%99s-Mormon-Religion-2.aspx\">Pew Research Center poll<\/a>\u00a0found that 65% of Americans believe liberals have gone too far trying to keep religion out of schools and government. A smaller, but significant share (48%) think conservative Christians have gone too far to try to impose religious values on the country.<\/p>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter responsive\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2013\/06\/FT_13.06.13_SchoolPrayer_byYear.png\" width=\"641\" height=\"549\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A majority of Americans disapprove of the Supreme Court\u2019s stance on prayer in public schools, according to 2012 data from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.norc.org\/gss+website\/\">General Social Survey<\/a>, conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. Asked whether they approve or disapprove of the court\u2019s ruling that no state or local government may require the reading of the Lord&#8217;s\u00a0Prayer\u00a0or Bible verses in public schools, roughly 39% say they approve and about 57% say they disapprove. Those percentages have stayed relatively steady since the early 1980s.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Costner\u2019s fellow Southerners are among the strongest critics of the Supreme Court\u2019s rulings on school prayer. More than seven-in-ten people (73%) living in the South say they disapprove of the high court\u2019s decisions on the topic in the 2012 GSS. But many in Costner\u2019s generation have a different view. Nationwide, about 56% of those ages 18-29 say they approve of the ban on school prayer \u2013 by far the highest share of any age group.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2013\/06\/FT_13.06.13_SchoolPrayer_byRegion-Age.png\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e4ebec\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e4ebec;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"606\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2013\/06\/FT_13.06.13_SchoolPrayer_byRegion-Age.png?resize=480,455 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2013\/06\/FT_13.06.13_SchoolPrayer_byRegion-Age.png?resize=640,606 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-28260 not-transparent\" alt=\"FT_13.06.13_SchoolPrayer_byRegion-Age\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2013\/06\/FT_13.06.13_SchoolPrayer_byRegion-Age.png\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans are well-informed about the Supreme Court\u2019s rulings on school prayer. Of the 41 questions that Pew Research asked in its <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/U-S-Religious-Knowledge-Survey-Who-Knows-What-About-Religion.aspx#Public\">2010 Religious Knowledge Survey<\/a>, the single question the largest number of people got right is whether the Supreme Court rulings allow teachers to lead public school classes in prayer. Nearly nine-in-ten respondents (89%) correctly answered that this is not allowed. But the survey also found that many people think constitutional restrictions on religion in public schools are stricter than they really are.\u00a0 Only 36% of the respondents to the survey knew that public school teachers are allowed to teach comparative religion courses, and just 23% were aware that teachers can read from the Bible as an example of literature.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this month, the valedictorian at Liberty (S.C.)
