NASA introduced eight new astronauts<\/a> earlier this week\u2014the agency\u2019s first in four years\u2014who could be part of the first human missions to land on an asteroid<\/a> in the 2020s and then on Mars<\/a> in the following decade. And a Pew Research survey indicates that these exploration goals are consistent with the predictions of most Americans. In 2010, a majority of Americans<\/a> (63%) were optimistic that astronauts would land on Mars by 2050.<\/p>\n\n

The space agency\u2019s bold announcement came on the eve of both the 30th anniversary of Sally Ride\u2019s historic flight<\/a> into space and the 85th anniversary of Amelia Earhart\u2019s first flight<\/a> across the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n\n

The Pew Research \u201cLife in 2050<\/a>\u201d report published in 2010 found that despite the imminent end of the space shuttle program, Americans were optimistic about the potential for space exploration. However, fewer people were optimistic about the likelihood of a human landing on Mars than in 1999 (63% in 2010, 76% in 1999).<\/p>\n\n

The survey also found that half of Americans believed ordinary people would travel in space (53%) and evidence of life would be found elsewhere in the universe (50%) by 2050.<\/p>\n\n

When asked about the likelihood of an asteroid hitting Earth before 2050, Americans were consistently not worried. Fewer than one-third (31%) of Americans\u2014the same percentage as in 1999\u2014said that it would definitely or probably happen.<\/p>\n\n
