{"id":15862,"date":"2013-06-27T00:01:56","date_gmt":"2013-06-27T05:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/%year%\/%monthnum%\/%day%\/most-americans-believe-climate-change-is-real-but-fewer-see-it-as-a-threat\/"},"modified":"2024-04-14T03:30:45","modified_gmt":"2024-04-14T08:30:45","slug":"most-americans-believe-climate-change-is-real-but-fewer-see-it-as-a-threat","status":"publish","type":"short-read","link":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2013\/06\/27\/most-americans-believe-climate-change-is-real-but-fewer-see-it-as-a-threat\/","title":{"rendered":"Most Americans believe climate change is real, but fewer see it as a threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Obama on Tuesday <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/blogs\/politics\/2013\/06\/president-obama-outlines-plan-to-combat-climate-change-says-keystone-pipeline-must-not-increase-greenhouse-gases\/\">laid out his plan<\/a> for combating climate change, including a series of executive actions he intends to take in order to get around likely congressional opposition.\u00a0 But while Obama might be able to side-step Congress, another challenge he faces is public opinion in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2013\/04\/02\/keystone-xl-pipeline-draws-broad-support\/\">survey in March<\/a> found that 69% of Americans agree there is solid evidence the earth is warming, only 33% described it as a \u201cvery\u201d serious problem, while another 32% said it was \u201csomewhat serious.\u201d Back in January, when Americans were asked about <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2013\/01\/24\/deficit-reduction-rises-on-publics-agenda-for-obamas-second-term\/\">what should be a \u201ctop priority\u201d<\/a> for the president and Congress this year, dealing with global warming ranked last, with 28% holding that view.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Separately, a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2013\/06\/24\/climate-change-and-financial-instability-seen-as-top-global-threats\/\">Pew Research survey of 39 nations<\/a> conducted between March and May found that 40% of Americans say climate change as a major threat to the U.S., compared to a median of 54% in the global survey.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more-->On specific issues, Obama said he would not approve building the controversial 1,700-mile <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/tag\/keystone-xl-pipeline\/\">Keystone Pipeline<\/a> , connecting Canadian oil sands to Gulf Coast refineries if it was shown that doing so would significantly worsen climate change. The March survey found that 66% of Americans favored the building of the Keystone pipeline.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obama also said he would have the Environmental Protection Agency draft new standards to reduce carbon emissions from new and existing power plants. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2013\/02\/21\/section-1-opinions-about-major-issues\/#carbon-emissions\">survey conducted in February<\/a> found 62% in favor of setting stricter emission limits on power plants, with Democrats strongly in favor and Republicans divided.<\/p>\n\n<figure><a
