But it is hard to remember when a series of stories have given this issue such resonance, whether in the rulings of the Supreme Court on <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2013\/06\/24\/as-supreme-court-defers-affirmative-action-ruling-deep-divides-persist\/\">affirmative action<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2013\/06\/25\/in-closely-watched-case-supreme-court-strikes-down-key-section-of-voting-rights-act\/\">voting rights<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2013\/06\/10\/as-the-trayvon-martin-case-goes-to-trial-remembering-a-major-media-event\/\">tense trial in a Florida courtroom<\/a> and even the racially insensitive comments of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/06\/26\/paula-deen-today-show_n_3501825.html\">celebrity chef<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the wake of the election of the nation\u2019s first black president, African Americans\u2019 sense of the country\u2019s \u2013 and their own \u2013 progress improved markedly, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2010\/01\/12\/blacks-upbeat-about-black-progress-prospects\/\">as a 2010 Pew Research Center report documented<\/a>. To some extent, these more positive views endure: Our June survey found that blacks (36%) were far more likely than whites (19%) to say that economic conditions were excellent or good, even though the unemployment rate for blacks was roughly double that for whites.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the good feelings among blacks after Barack Obama\u2019s election co-exist with a persistent belief that discrimination and unfairness remain a part of life for African Americans in this country. <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2013\/05\/07\/after-boston-little-change-in-views-of-islam-and-violence\/\">To take a recent example<\/a>, in May fully 88% said there was a lot or some discrimination against blacks, with 46% seeing a lot of discrimination.
