This event, which came after years of escalating tensions between the nobility and commoners over issues such as debt, taxation, and enlightenment ideals, became a flashpoint for the French Revolution. Two-hundred and twenty-four years later the public mood in France is dour, with many of the same economic issues clouding the future of the Fifth Republic.<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center\u2019s March <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2013\/05\/13\/chapter-4-france-in-free-fall\/\">survey<\/a> in France revealed not just negative views of current economic conditions, but deep concern over inequality and harsh critiques of European Union and French leadership in the euro crisis.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2013\/07\/FT_France-dark-mood.png\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ececec\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ececec;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"607\" height=\"161\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2013\/07\/FT_France-dark-mood.png?resize=480,127 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2013\/07\/FT_France-dark-mood.png?resize=607,161 607w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-27880 not-transparent\" alt=\"FT_France-dark-mood\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2013\/07\/FT_France-dark-mood.png\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly nine-in-ten said economic conditions were bad, and 80% said they were dissatisfied with their country\u2019s direction. Additionally, 61% said the current economic situation would <i>worsen<\/i> over the next 12 months (and in fact, since the survey was administered, economics conditions <a href=\"http:\/\/epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu\/cache\/ITY_PUBLIC\/2-05062013-BP\/EN\/2-05062013-BP-EN.PDF\">have deteriorated<\/a>).\u00a0 Meanwhile, eight-in-ten cited a lack of job opportunities as a very big problem and seven-in-ten thought the economic system generally favors the wealthy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while President Hollande is certainly no Louis XVI, two-thirds of the French say that he is doing a bad job of handling the EU economic crisis. A further 58% have an unfavorable view of the EU, and 77% think the economic integration of Europe has weakened the French economy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As France marks its national holiday, it is worth celebrating the past.
