Last week, National Council of La Raza President Janet Murgu\u00eda called the president the \u201cdeporter in chief.\u201d Over the weekend, <a href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.com\/html\/localnews\/2023084563_hungerstrikedetentionxml.html\">hundreds of detainees at a federal immigration detention center<\/a> in Tacoma, Wash., called for an end to deportations with a hunger strike.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/03\/Deportations1.png\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eee8e4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eee8e4;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"311\" height=\"450\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" class=\"wp-image-27016 not-transparent\" alt=\"US Public opinion on deportation of illegal immigrants\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/03\/Deportations1.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/03\/Deportations1.png 311w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/03\/Deportations1.png?resize=207,300 207w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/03\/Deportations1.png?resize=280,405 280w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/03\/Deportations1.png?resize=200,289 200w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/03\/Deportations1.png?resize=260,376 260w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/03\/Deportations1.png?resize=160,232 160w\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The American public is evenly divided on whether the increased number of deportations of undocumented immigrants in recent years is a good thing or a bad thing (45% each), <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2014\/02\/27\/public-divided-over-increased-deportation-of-unauthorized-immigrants\/\">according to a recent Pew Research Center survey of U.S. adults<\/a>. About half of whites (49%) view the growing number of deportations positively. But Hispanics have a different view. By 60% to 35%, Hispanics view the increase negatively, according to the survey.<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pressure on the president comes with an immigration reform bill stalled in the House. Meanwhile, deportations <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/01\/24\/record-number-of-deportations-in-2012\/\">have risen sharply under Obama.<\/a> About 395,500 immigrants per year have been deported since 2009, compared to about 250,000 deportations per year under George W. Bush.<\/p>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"Annual Deportations of illegal immigrants 1992 to 2012\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/02\/2-27-2014_02.png\" width=\"309\" height=\"350\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several top Democrats last week spoke out on the issue. Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., pressed Obama to take steps to stop deportations at the same event where Murgu\u00eda made her remarks. Democratic senators Dick Durbin of Illinois and Charles Schumer of New York <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2014\/03\/barack-obama-deportations-immigration-104388.html#ixzz2vJjZ4ghs\">later voiced their support of the idea.<\/a> Obama responded at Thursday\u2019s town hall meeting by <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/200106-obama-rebukes-deportation-criticism\">calling himself the \u201cchampion in chief of comprehensive immigration reform.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our survey, opinions split along party lines. About as many Republicans (55%) called the increased deportations a \u201cgood thing\u201d as Democrats (53%) called the trend a \u201cbad thing.\u201d However, a majority of Republicans (64%) and Democrats (81%) support allowing unauthorized immigrants to legally stay in the U.S. if they meet certain requirements.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hispanics last fall expressed concern over the threat of deportation <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/hispanic\/2013\/12\/19\/on-immigration-policy-deportation-relief-seen-as-more-important-than-citizenship\/\">in a Pew Research survey<\/a>. A majority (55%) said it was more important for undocumented immigrants to be able to work and live in the U.S. without the threat of deportation than to obtain citizenship. About three-quarters of the nation\u2019s 11.7 million undocumented immigrants are Hispanic, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/hispanic\/2013\/09\/23\/population-decline-of-unauthorized-immigrants-stalls-may-have-reversed\/\">according to Pew Research estimates.<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The White House is under pressure from Democrats and Latino leaders to ease deportations, as the number of unauthorized immigrants sent home neared 2 million under the Obama administration.
