Sub-Saharan Africa is home to more than two-thirds of the world\u2019s people living with HIV, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amfar.org\/about-hiv-and-aids\/facts-and-stats\/statistics--worldwide\/\">according to amfAR<\/a>, The Foundation for AIDS Research.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2014\/04\/15\/global-morality\/table\/contraception-use\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ede3d4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ede3d4;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"299\" height=\"300\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/04\/FT_Contraceptive_Use2.png?resize=299,300 299w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-26878 not-transparent\" alt=\"Many in Africa see use of contraception as immoral\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/04\/FT_Contraceptive_Use2.png\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Francis didn\u2019t specifically refer to condom use, his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, once said that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/blogs\/legacy\/ni\/2009\/03\/pope_benedict_says_condoms_can.html\">condoms can \u201cincrease the problem\u201d<\/a> of HIV and AIDS by encouraging promiscuity. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a6.htm\">Roman Catholic Church teaching<\/a> rejects the use of artificial contraception on a moral basis.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several African nations stand out among the most conservative on the issue of contraceptive use, according to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2014\/04\/15\/global-morality\/table\/contraception-use\/\">Pew Research Center survey<\/a> of people in 40 countries. Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya and Senegal ranked among the nine countries with the most moral opposition to contraception.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more-->In Nigeria and Ghana, roughly half or more of each population said that contraceptive use is morally unacceptable (54% and 52%, respectively). Out of the 40 countries surveyed, only Pakistan (65%) had a higher rate of opposition.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is less moral objection to contraception in the other sub-Saharan African nations in the survey, but significant shares in Uganda (38%), Kenya (33%) and Senegal (28%) said contraceptive use is morally wrong. The comparable figure for the U.S. is 7%.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Africa, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/library\/publications\/the-world-factbook\/rankorder\/2156rank.html\">more people living with HIV\/AIDS<\/a> than any other nation, stands out in sub-Saharan Africa for its lower level of moral opposition to contraceptive use. Just 15% of South Africans said contraception is morally unacceptable, while fully two-thirds (68%) said it is morally acceptable. A <a href=\"http:\/\/rsif.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/early\/2012\/01\/19\/rsif.2011.0826.full\">study published in 2012<\/a> by the British Royal Society found that increased condom use was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/node\/21550001\">\u201cmost significant factor\u201d in slowing the spread of HIV<\/a> in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n<p
