Of all those deported, 33% had committed at least one felony\u2014crimes ranging from murder to failure to appear in court<ins cite=\"mailto:sgoo\" datetime=\"2014-03-16T22:16\">,<\/ins> or at least three misdemeanors. That means 152,000 immigrants were deported but did not have a criminal conviction.\u00a0Another 95,000 were deported and had a criminal record that included no more than two misdemeanors.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deportations\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/01\/24\/record-number-of-deportations-in-2012\/\">have risen under Obama, compared with his predecessor, George W. Bush.<\/a>\u00a0About 396,000 immigrants per year have been deported since 2009, compared to about 252,000 deportations a year under Bush, though deportations had risen to about 360,000 during Bush\u2019s last year in office.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans say\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2014\/mar\/12\/deportations-come-mostly-from-border-dhs-chief-say\/\">Obama has been lax on enforcement<\/a>\u00a0because most deportations under his administration have come at the border rather than from the interior of the country. About 64% of those deported in fiscal year 2013 were arrested at the border, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/12\/20\/us\/us-deportations-decline-felons-made-up-big-share.html?_r=1&amp;\">but no comparable data from past years are available<\/a> because this is the first year Immigration and Customs Enforcement had reported this statistic.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans are evenly divided on whether the increased number of deportations of undocumented immigrants in recent years is a good thing or a bad thing (45% each),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2014\/02\/27\/public-divided-over-increased-deportation-of-unauthorized-immigrants\/\">according to a recent Pew Research Center survey of U.S. adults<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/03\/11\/americans-split-on-deportations-as-latinos-press-obama-on-issue\/\">Pressure on Obama to act on deportations<\/a> started last week, when National Council of La Raza President Janet Murgu\u00eda called the president the \u201cdeporter in chief.\u201d But the White House\u00a0said that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/14\/us\/obama-orders-review-of-deportations.html?src=twrhp&amp;_r=2\">president would not suspend deportations<\/a>, nor would he expand the number of immigrants eligible for work permits under <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2013\/06\/27\/if-they-could-how-many-unauthorized-immigrants-would-become-u-s-citizens\/\">the\u00a02012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relief from the threat of deportation is more important than a chance at citizenship to a majority (55%) of Hispanics,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/hispanic\/2013\/12\/19\/on-immigration-policy-deportation-relief-seen-as-more-important-than-citizenship\/\">according to a Pew Research survey last fall.<\/a> About three-quarters of the nation\u2019s 11.7 million unauthorized immigrants are Hispanic,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/hispanic\/2013\/09\/23\/population-decline-of-unauthorized-immigrants-stalls-may-have-reversed\/\">according to Pew Research
