A poll conducted six years after the landmark bill became law found signs of perceived improvement: 64% of African Americans said things were \u201cgetting better\u201d for most black people compared to four or five years ago, according to a national Harris Survey.<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast-forward to August 2013, when just one-in-four blacks (26%) who answered a similar question agree with that statement, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2013\/08\/22\/kings-dream-remains-an-elusive-goal-many-americans-see-racial-disparities\/#overview\">Pew Research Center survey<\/a> conducted before the 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the March on Washington. That was down sharply from the 39% who said the same in a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2010\/01\/12\/blacks-upbeat-about-black-progress-prospects\/#racial-identity-do-the-old-categories-still-work\">2009 Pew Research survey<\/a> conducted the year Obama took office as the nation\u2019s first black president.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the August 2013 poll, about <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2013\/08\/22\/kings-dream-remains-an-elusive-goal-many-americans-see-racial-disparities\/2\/#demographic-differences\">eight-in-ten blacks<\/a> (79%) said \u201ca lot\u201d more needed to be done to achieve racial equality, compared with 44% of whites. Some 32% of blacks and 48% of whites said \u201ca lot\u201d of progress had been made toward racial equality over the past 50 years.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2013 poll also came shortly after Trayvon Martin verdict. On July 13, a Florida jury found George Zimmerman, a white Hispanic, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/14\/us\/george-zimmerman-verdict-trayvon-martin.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0\">not guilty of murder<\/a> in the shooting death of Martin, an unarmed black teenager.
