The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/news\/technology\/huffpost-india-launching-thanksgiving-week-159623\">Huffington Post<\/a> joined a growing number of outlets expanding into the country when it recently announced partnering with The Times of India to launch HuffPost India in November.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While India has had a strong <a href=\"http:\/\/stateofthemedia.org\/2011\/mobile-survey\/international-newspaper-economics\/\">newspaper market<\/a>, the country&#8217;s digital penetration lags behind that of other countries. Just 13% of Indians went online in 2012, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/ITU-D\/Statistics\/Pages\/stat\/default.aspx\">International Telecommunication Union<\/a>.\u00a0A\u00a0recent Pew Research survey found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/04\/08\/in-india-few-use-social-media-to-share-political-views\/\">only 8% of Indians<\/a>\u00a0with cell phones use them to access political news.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">News companies are betting on speedy growth in the digital market to\u00a0replicate that of newspapers, given the potential for growth as more in India go online. Internet adoption in India is up \u2014 about\u00a0three-fourths of the population <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/04\/08\/in-india-few-use-social-media-to-share-political-views\/\">own cell phones<\/a>, and the country <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/World-News\/2014\/04\/09\/100-million-Facebook-users-in-India\/9721397069916\/\">recently surpassed<\/a> 100 million active Facebook users. Online news consumption is also increasing. India\u2019s unique visitors to online news and information sites grew from 31 million in 2011 to 45 million in 2014, an increase of 45%, according to an analysis by comScore. And the government is actively trying to accelerate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/cabinet-plan-to-make-india-digitally-empowered\/article6335922.ece\">India\u2019s move toward<\/a>\u00a0embracing digital technology.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more-->In the 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2014\/03\/26\/the-growth-in-digital-reporting\/\">State of the News Media<\/a> report, Pew Research Center examined the growth in digital news and found that many organizations are <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2014\/03\/26\/what-the-digital-news-boom-means-for-consumers\/#international-news\">investing in global reporting<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 an area that has seen major cutbacks in recent years.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/FT_India_Bet.png\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eeeeee\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eeeeee;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"315\" height=\"391\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/08\/FT_India_Bet.png?resize=315,391 315w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-26678 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/08\/FT_India_Bet.png\" alt=\"FT_India_Bet\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2010, nine major outlets from the U.S. or UK have launched or will launch a digital outlet in India. BBC News, which has long been an established brand in India, introduced a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/mediacentre\/worldnews\/bbc-international-news-messaging\">mobile news site<\/a> in April to coincide with the political elections. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitalnewyork.com\/article\/media\/2014\/03\/8542366\/atlantic-launch-quartz-india\">Quartz<\/a>, a digital publication owned by Atlantic Media, debuted <a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/india\/\">Quartz India<\/a> in June.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quartz Publisher Jay Lauf cited India\u2019s growing middle class, the country\u2019s appetite for business journalism and the potential for large scale digital and mobile growth as reasons for launching in India. \u201cBy establishing our brand now,\u201d Lauf said, \u201cimagine where we\u2019ll be in five years\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.in\/\">Business Insider India<\/a> debuted in 2013, as\u00a0did Indian-specific sites from Gizmodo and CBS-owned ZDNet. The British newspaper, Daily Mail, introduced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/indiahome\/index.html\">Mail Online India<\/a> in 2012, and blogs from <a href=\"http:\/\/india.blogs.nytimes.com\/\">The New York Times<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/indiarealtime\/\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a> debuted in 2011 and 2010, respectively. (The New York Times subsequently shut down many of its blogs, including India Ink in July 2014). And three digital-only companies have India on the\u00a0radar. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.vice.com\/\">Vice News<\/a> is in the early phases of establishing an operation in India, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalpost.com\/\">Global Post<\/a> has reporting resources there and BuzzFeed has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/buzzfeedpress\/buzzfeed-announces-major-expansion-across-all-business-lines\">plans to expand<\/a> there by the end of
