The Outlook 2015 report suggests renewed focus on improved education, tax policy and job creation as ways to alleviate the problem. Pew Research Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2014\/10\/09\/emerging-and-developing-economies-much-more-optimistic-than-rich-countries-about-the-future\/\">own findings<\/a> show that majorities in all of the 44 nations surveyed say inequality is a big problem facing their countries<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<strong>Persistent jobless growth<\/strong> \u2013 Harvard professor Larry Summers <a href=\"http:\/\/reports.weforum.org\/outlook-global-agenda-2015\/top-10-trends-of-2015\/2-persistent-jobless-growth\/\">writes<\/a> that this global threat is brought on, in part, by technological changes, and that \u201cautomation is certainly the biggest single contributing factor\u201d to the problem. Our 2014 #web25 <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2014\/08\/06\/future-of-jobs\/\">survey of technology experts<\/a> found that half envision a future in which robots and digital agents have displaced significant numbers of both blue- and white-collar workers.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<strong>Lack of leadership<\/strong> \u2013 Shiza Shahid, co-founder of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.malala.org\/\">Malala Fund<\/a>, points out that \u201ca startling 86% of respondents to the Survey on the Global Agenda agree that we have a leadership crisis in the world today\u201d and points to corruption in emerging and developing economies as a major reason why. <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2014\/11\/06\/crime-and-corruption-top-problems-in-emerging-and-developing-countries\">Our recent survey<\/a> finds a median of 76% across 34 emerging and developing nations say corrupt political leaders are a very big problem in their countries and that bribes <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/10\/23\/where-people-say-giving-bribes-gets-you-ahead-in-life\/\">are seen as important<\/a> for getting ahead in life in certain countries.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/11\/World-Economic-Forum-01.png\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e4e1d0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e4e1d0;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"309\" height=\"473\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/11\/World-Economic-Forum-01.png?resize=309,473 309w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-26000 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/11\/World-Economic-Forum-01.png\" alt=\"Growing concern about disputes with China\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<strong>Rising geostrategic competition<\/strong> \u2013Global Agenda survey respondents are particularly concerned about the potential for geopolitical conflict in the next 12-18 months in Asia, but security worries are also high in Europe and the Middle East. Pew Research\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2014\/07\/14\/chapter-4-how-asians-view-each-other\/\">public opinion survey<\/a> in Asia shows many are concerned that territorial disputes with China and neighboring countries could lead to a military conflict.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Weakening of democracy<\/strong> \u2013 While the greatest concern for the future of representative democracy comes from those in the Middle East and North Africa, there is also cause for concern in Europe. <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2014\/05\/12\/a-fragile-rebound-for-eu-image-on-eve-of-european-parliament-elections\/\">Our spring survey<\/a>, before the European Union elections, found that a median of 71% across the seven EU countries surveyed said their voice does not count in the EU and 65% said the EU does not understand the needs of its citizens.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<strong>Rising pollution in the developing world<\/strong> \u2013 Once again, Asian respondents to the Global Agenda survey are more concerned about air pollution than other regions. But across 34 emerging and developing nations that <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2014\/11\/06\/crime-and-corruption-top-problems-in-emerging-and-developing-countries\">we surveyed<\/a>, including nine in Asia, a median of 54% see air pollution as a problem in their countries.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/11\/World-Economic-Forum-02.png\"><img data-dominant-color=\"efefef\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #efefef;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"302\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/11\/World-Economic-Forum-02.png?resize=480,227 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/11\/World-Economic-Forum-02.png?resize=640,302 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-26004 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/11\/World-Economic-Forum-02.png\" alt=\"global concerns climate change as threat\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<strong>Increasing occurrence of severe weather events<\/strong>\u2013 An increase in these high-intensity events is characterized as \u201ca major consequence of climate change\u201d by Adil Najam, a Dean of Global Studies at Boston University. Concern about climate change as a threat <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2013\/06\/24\/climate-change-and-financial-instability-seen-as-top-global-threats\/\">is particularly prevalent<\/a> in Latin America, Asia, Europe and Africa, but people in the Middle East and the United States are less concerned.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<strong>Intensifying nationalism<\/strong> \u2013 Gordon Brown, the former British Prime Minister, worries about growing nationalism in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, saying \u201cwe don\u2019t need to sever connections between each other to thrive in the modern world.\u201d With the recent closeness of the Scottish Referendum and plans for a similar vote in Catalonia, Global Agenda respondents were most concerned about an increase in nationalism in Europe.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/11\/World-Economic-Forum-Health-Care.png\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e0e2d3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e0e2d3;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"309\" height=\"423\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/11\/World-Economic-Forum-Health-Care.png?resize=309,423 309w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-26011 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/11\/World-Economic-Forum-Health-Care.png\" alt=\"health care, crime corruption top problems around world\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<strong>Increasing water stress<\/strong> \u2013 The regions most affected by water stress are located in the Middle East and North Africa and Central and Western Asia. Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2014\/11\/06\/crime-and-corruption-top-problems-in-emerging-and-developing-countries\">a Pew Research Center survey<\/a> found that Middle Easterners are worried about water pollution, with 87% in Tunisia and 80% in Lebanon saying it is a very big problem.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<strong>Growing importance of health in the economy<\/strong> \u2013 As developing nations grow, health care spending in those countries is also expected to increase. In fact, the most important problem facing the emerging and developing economies in our survey, after economic issues, corruption and crime, is health care.
