Here are&nbsp;14 facts&nbsp;we found particularly&nbsp;striking, as they&nbsp;illustrate some major shifts in our politics, society, habits or families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans and Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2014\/06\/12\/political-polarization-in-the-american-public\/\">are more divided<\/a> along ideological lines \u2013 and partisan antipathy is deeper and more extensive \u2013 than at any point in the last two decades:&nbsp;92% of Republicans are to the right of the median Democrat; and, conversely, 94% of Democrats are to the left of the median Republican.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2014\/06\/12\/political-polarization-in-the-american-public\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/06\/PP-2014-06-12-polarization-1-01.png\" alt=\"Political Polarization\" width=\"640\" height=\"410\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more-->The earnings gap between young adults&nbsp;with a bachelor&#8217;s degree or higher and those without has never been greater <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2014\/02\/11\/the-rising-cost-of-not-going-to-college\/\">in the modern era<\/a>, despite soaring student debt and high youth unemployment. In 1979, when the first wave of Baby Boomers were the same age that Millennials are today, the typical high school graduate earned about three-quarters (77%) of what a college graduate made. In 2012, one-in-five adults ages 25 and older had <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2014\/09\/24\/record-share-of-americans-have-never-married\/\">never been married<\/a>.&nbsp;Men are more likely than women to have never been married. And this gender gap has widened since 1960.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2014\/09\/24\/record-share-of-americans-have-never-married\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/09\/ST-2014-09-24-never-married-16.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"310\" height=\"400\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly three-quarters (72%) of the public thinks religion is losing influence in American life, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2014\/09\/22\/public-sees-religions-influence-waning-2\/\">up from 52% who said so in 2002<\/a>; and&nbsp;most people who say religion&#8217;s influence is waning see this as a bad thing.&nbsp;Perhaps as a consequence, a growing share say religion&nbsp;<em>should<\/em> play a role in politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2014\/09\/22\/public-sees-religions-influence-waning-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/09\/PR_14.09.22_religionPolitics-01.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"310\" height=\"530\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">The Great Recession was hard on all&nbsp;American families. But even as the economic recovery has begun to mend asset prices, not all households have benefited alike, and wealth inequality has <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/12\/12\/racial-wealth-gaps-great-recession\/\">widened along racial and ethnic lines<\/a>. The median wealth of white households was 13 times the wealth&nbsp;of black households and 10 times that of Hispanic households in 2013, compared with eight and nine&nbsp;times the wealth in 2010, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/12\/12\/racial-wealth-gaps-great-recession\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/12\/FT_14.12.11_wealthGap2.png\" alt=\"Racial, Ethnic Wealth Gaps\" width=\"640\" height=\"446\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">Americans are now <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/02\/27\/americans-increasingly-view-the-internet-cellphones-as-essential\/\">more attached<\/a> to their&nbsp;cellphones and internet access than their televisions or landline telephones, marking a shift in their communications habits since 2006. Over half of internet users now say the internet would be \u201cvery hard\u201d to give up. And among this devoted group, 61% say&nbsp;the internet is&nbsp;<em>essential<\/em> to them, either for work or other reasons. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/packages\/state-of-the-news-media-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">State of the Media<\/a> report found that there are <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2014\/03\/26\/the-growth-in-digital-reporting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">468 digital news outlets<\/a> employing nearly 5,000 journalists. Even so, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/04\/03\/news-revenue-declines-despite-growth-from-new-sources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">overall revenue for the news media industry has declined<\/a> by one-third since 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/04\/FT_Newsgathering_Revenue.png\" alt=\"news revenue declines\" width=\"310\" height=\"435\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">Immigration policy debates continue to roil Congress and Washington, with Obama&#8217;s&nbsp;recent executive action likely to affect millions of unauthorized immigrants. While the population growth of unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S.&nbsp;has stabilized, there&#8217;s been a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/hispanic\/2014\/09\/03\/as-growth-stalls-unauthorized-immigrant-population-becomes-more-settled\/\">sharp increase<\/a>&nbsp;in the median length of time they have lived here. The typical unauthorized immigrant adult has now been in the U.S. for nearly 13 years,&nbsp;up from 7.4 years in 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/hispanic\/2014\/09\/03\/as-growth-stalls-unauthorized-immigrant-population-becomes-more-settled\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2014\/09\/PH-2014-09-03-immigration-02.png\" alt=\"Unauthorized Immigrants Staying in U.S. for Longer\" width=\"422\" height=\"498\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">Economies worldwide are still struggling to recover from the 2008 global financial crisis, and growth overall has been lackluster, especially in Europe. But life is improving in some places more than others. People in emerging markets&nbsp;now rival those in advanced economies in their self-reported well-being: A median of&nbsp;51% in emerging markets&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2014\/10\/30\/people-in-emerging-markets-catch-up-to-advanced-economies-in-life-satisfaction\/\">now say they are satisfied with their lives<\/a>, an increase of 18 points since&nbsp;2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2014\/10\/30\/people-in-emerging-markets-catch-up-to-advanced-economies-in-life-satisfaction\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/10\/Satisfaction-10.png\" alt=\"Life Satisfaction in Emerging Markets\" width=\"309\" height=\"410\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">The world&#8217;s aging population, especially in developed nations, has become a focus of concern, for the global economy and policy decisions related to social programs. By 2050, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2014\/01\/30\/attitudes-about-aging-a-global-perspective\/\">the majority of people in Japan, South Korea and Germany are projected to be older than 50<\/a>.
