{"id":13735,"date":"2015-02-26T07:00:05","date_gmt":"2015-02-26T12:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/%year%\/%monthnum%\/%day%\/5-facts-about-consistent-conservatives\/"},"modified":"2024-04-14T03:20:25","modified_gmt":"2024-04-14T08:20:25","slug":"5-facts-about-consistent-conservatives","status":"publish","type":"short-read","link":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/02\/26\/5-facts-about-consistent-conservatives\/","title":{"rendered":"5 facts about consistent conservatives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The annual <a href=\"http:\/\/cpac.conservative.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conservative Political Action Conference<\/a>\u00a0begins this week, a three-day event hosted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/conservative.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Conservative Union<\/a>\u00a0where activists, officeholders, campaign consultants and others will hear from a dozen or so\u00a0potential Republican presidential candidates\u00a0\u2013 among them\u00a0Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Rand Paul, Chris Christie and Ted Cruz.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year&#8217;s series of Pew Research Center reports on <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/packages\/political-polarization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">political polarization<\/a>\u00a0used a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2014\/06\/12\/appendix-a-the-ideological-consistency-scale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10-item scale<\/a> of ideological consistency to place Americans into five categories: consistently conservative or liberal, mostly conservative or liberal, and mixed. By that metric, 9% of the public overall is consistently conservative, including 20% of Republicans and Republican leaners; most of the remaining Republicans and leaners were &#8220;mostly conservative&#8221; (33%) or had a mixture of liberal and conservative views (37%).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are five facts drawn from our package of reports about consistent conservatives:<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/02\/FT_15.02.26_CPAC.png\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f1f1ee\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f1f1ee;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"422\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/02\/FT_15.02.26_CPAC.png?resize=480,317 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/02\/FT_15.02.26_CPAC.png?resize=640,422 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-25480 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/02\/FT_15.02.26_CPAC.png\" alt=\"FT_15.02.26_CPAC\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">1<strong>Consistent conservatives participate in politics at higher rates than most other ideological groups. <\/strong>Political engagement tends to be highest among the most consistent conservatives and liberals, the Pew Research survey found. Half of\u00a0consistent conservatives, for example, said they had contacted an elected official within the past two years \u2013 the highest level of any of our five groups. (The corresponding figure for all Americans, by the way, was 28%.) Consistent conservatives also ranked high on other measurements of <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2014\/06\/12\/section-5-political-engagement-and-activism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">political engagement<\/a>, such as donating\u00a0money (26%), attending campaign events (24%) and volunteering on a campaign (12%).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">2<strong>Conservatives had outsize influence in the November midterm elections.<\/strong>\u00a0Although consistent conservatives make up only about 9% of the total adult population, they vote at higher rates than people elsewhere on the ideological spectrum: 78% said they always vote, compared with 49% of the general public. Consequently, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2014\/10\/17\/political-polarization-in-action-insights-into-the-2014-election-from-the-american-trends-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a>\u00a0we published a few weeks before the 2014 midterms estimated that consistent conservatives would make up 17% of the November 2014 electorate.<\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2014\/06\/12\/section-3-political-polarization-and-personal-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/06\/PP-2014-06-12-polarization-3-03.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"309\" height=\"483\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">3<strong>Conservatives\u00a0would rather live in small towns or rural areas than anywhere else.<\/strong>\u00a0Our\u00a0research\u00a0found an overwhelming preference among the most conservative Americans for nonurban lifestyles: 41% of consistent conservatives said they would live in a rural area if they could live anywhere in the U.S., and 35% picked a small town; just 4% said they&#8217;d prefer a city.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, three-quarters of consistent conservatives said they&#8217;d rather live in a place where\u00a0\u201cthe houses are larger and farther apart, but schools, stores and restaurants are several miles away,\u201d and just 22% said they\u2019d choose to live where \u201cthe houses are smaller and closer to each other, but schools, stores and restaurants are within walking distance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2014\/09\/18\/teaching-the-children-sharp-ideological-differences-some-common-ground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/09\/9-18-2014_10.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"457\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">4<strong>When it comes to raising children, conservatives prioritize responsibility, faith and hard work.<\/strong>\u00a0When we asked our American Trends Panel about the three most important <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2014\/09\/18\/teaching-the-children-sharp-ideological-differences-some-common-ground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">traits to teach children<\/a>, 61% of consistent conservatives cited &#8220;being responsible,&#8221; and about as many (59%) identified religious faith as particularly important; hard work was chosen by 44%. While responsibility led among all five ideological groups, and hard work was among the top three for all but consistent liberals, religious faith was chosen by significantly more consistent conservatives than all other groups.<\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2014\/10\/21\/political-polarization-media-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2014\/10\/PJ_14.10.21_mediaPolarization-00.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"638\" height=\"509\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">5<strong>Conservatives gravitate toward\u00a0Fox News.<\/strong> A separate Pew Research report on <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2014\/10\/21\/political-polarization-media-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">polarization and media habits<\/a> found that 47% of consistent conservatives (and 31% of people with mostly conservative views) cited Fox News as their main source for news about government and politics; no other news source came close.
