When we launched <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/about-fact-tank\/\">Fact Tank<\/a> two years ago, the goal was to expand on the center&#8217;s data storytelling by bringing context\u00a0to the day\u2019s major news events and policy discussions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To celebrate Fact Tank\u2019s anniversary, here\u2019s a roundup of our\u00a0most-visited blog posts over the past year, along with\u00a0some insights into the editorial thinking behind them:\n<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/07\/14\/despite-recent-shootings-chicago-nowhere-near-u-s-murder-capital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Despite recent shootings, Chicago nowhere near U.S. \u2018murder capital\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/07\/14\/despite-recent-shootings-chicago-nowhere-near-u-s-murder-capital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/FT_14.07.14_HighestMurderRates.png\" alt=\"U.S. Murder Capital\" width=\"640\" height=\"367\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last summer, Chicago had 82 shootings <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2014\/07\/07\/gun-violence-chicago-july-4-10-dead\/12287053\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in one weekend<\/a>, prompting a flurry of news articles about gun violence in America. We noticed that Chicago was often cited as the \u201cmurder capital\u201d of the U.S., but we weren\u2019t sure whether that was true.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking at FBI data, we saw\u00a0that Chicago did indeed have the highest total number of murders of any U.S. city in 2012. But when adjusting for population, it was far from being the U.S. \u201cmurder capital.\u201d Topping that list was Flint, Mich., with 62 murders per 100,000 people.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/09\/25\/the-gops-millennial-problem-runs-deep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The GOP\u2019s Millennial problem runs deep<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/09\/25\/the-gops-millennial-problem-runs-deep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/FT_Millennial_Republicans.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"445\" height=\"629\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s no secret that the Republican Party has had trouble appealing to younger voters. Ahead of the 2014 midterm elections, we mined the data from our extensive 2014 political survey and found\u00a0that even GOP Millennials express significantly less-conservative values than their elders, particularly on social issues such as same-sex marriage and immigration.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the roughly one-third of Millennials who affiliate with or lean toward the Republican Party, just 31% have a mix of political values that are right-of-center, while about half (51%) take a mix of liberal and conservative positions and 18% have consistently or mostly liberal views.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/06\/05\/generation-x-americas-neglected-middle-child\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FT_14.05.12_GenX-unique.png\" alt=\"Is Your Generation Unique?\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/06\/05\/generation-x-americas-neglected-middle-child\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Generation X: America\u2019s neglected \u2018middle child\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking of Millennials, it seems not a week goes by without this generation making news headlines. It made some of us wonder: Why don\u2019t we ever read about Generation X?<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We decided to take a look at what makes this generation distinct. But it turns out there may be a reason Gen Xers\u00a0are so often missing from the front pages: they <em>don\u2019t <\/em>really stand out.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More often than not, Gen Xers\u2019 views and characteristics \u2013 such as their racial and ethnic makeup, religious affiliation, educational attainment, patriotism, and attitudes\u00a0on government, immigration and same-sex\u00a0marriage \u2013 fall somewhere in between those of two\u00a0much larger generations, the Millennials and Baby Boomers.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/05\/27\/a-shift-from-germany-to-mexico-for-americas-immigrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">From Germany to Mexico: How America\u2019s source of immigrants has changed over a century<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/05\/27\/a-shift-from-germany-to-mexico-for-americas-immigrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/mexico_germany31.gif\" alt=\"U.S. Immigration\" width=\"640\" height=\"518\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">America is still a melting pot, with more than 40 million foreign-born immigrants living inside its borders. But immigrants today \u2013 largely from Mexico \u2013 are very different from the last large wave of newcomers who arrived around the turn of the 20th\u00a0century, when Germany dominated as the country sending the most immigrants to many U.S. states.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/09\/08\/who-makes-minimum-wage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Who makes minimum wage?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/09\/08\/who-makes-minimum-wage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/FT_14.09.08_MinimumWage_table.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"427\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, 10 states and Washington, D.C., raised the state-level minimum wage, while four states approved minimum-wage increases in their ballot measures.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We crunched the data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and discovered that minimum-wage workers are disproportionately young, mostly white and largely part-time. They\u2019re also employed in the industries and occupations you might expect: Nearly 47% worked in food-preparation and serving-related occupations in 2013.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/11\/18\/5-facts-about-illegal-immigration-in-the-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5 facts about illegal immigration in the U.S.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last fall, President Obama took executive action to provide deportation relief to millions of unauthorized immigrants \u2013 after his administration <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/10\/02\/u-s-deportations-of-immigrants-reach-record-high-in-2013\/\">deported a record number of people<\/a> in fiscal 2013.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But who would be affected by the executive action? We rounded up our data on the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population to help answer this question.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/03\/24\/high-income-americans-pay-most-income-taxes-but-enough-to-be-fair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">High-income Americans pay most income taxes, but enough to be \u2018fair\u2019?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/03\/24\/high-income-americans-pay-most-income-taxes-but-enough-to-be-fair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/FT_15.03.23_taxesInd.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"366\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our polls show that Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2015\/03\/19\/federal-tax-system-seen-in-need-of-overhaul\/\">don\u2019t much like the federal tax system<\/a>, but it\u2019s not necessarily because of how much they pay in taxes \u2013\u00a0it\u2019s more likely because they feel corporations and wealthy people don\u2019t pay their fair share.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It turns out that, in 2013, people with adjusted gross incomes above $250,000 paid nearly half (48.9%) of the U.S.\u2019s total individual income taxes, though they accounted for only 2.4% of all returns filed.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/03\/12\/how-do-americans-stand-out-from-the-rest-of-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How do Americans stand out from the rest of the world?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/03\/12\/how-do-americans-stand-out-from-the-rest-of-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/FT_15.03.10_religiousGDPscatter.png\" alt=\"U.S. Religious Salience\" width=\"639\" height=\"535\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The differences between the U.S.\u00a0and other nations have long been a subject of fascination and study for social scientists. Our global surveys continue to\u00a0show that Americans stand out for their belief in individualism and the value of hard work.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when compared with other wealthy nations, Americans also stand out for their religiosity and optimism. One widely shared chart (above) shows that Americans are much more likely than their wealthy counterparts to say that religion plays a very important role in their lives.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/10\/02\/the-best-and-worst-cities-for-women-looking-to-marry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The best and worst cities for women looking to marry<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/interactives\/marriage-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/FT_14.10.1_metroPromo7.png\" alt=\"Mapping the Marriage Market\" width=\"640\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A rising share of Americans today <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2014\/09\/24\/record-share-of-americans-have-never-married\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have never been married<\/a>. And never-married women place a great deal of importance on finding a mate with a steady job.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those in the \u201cmarriage market,\u201d location matters. There will be a projected 73 million Millennials in that year, compared with 72 million Baby Boomers. But that\u2019s not all: The Millennial population is projected to grow until 2036 as young immigrants expand their ranks, while Boomers will shrink in size as deaths outpace arrivals of older immigrants.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: Item No. 10 in this post was updated on April 20, 2018, to reflect the Center&#8217;s <a
