A new poll in India shows the public\u2019s views of the country\u2019s direction and the economy are on the rise.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so, Indians continue to see problems in their daily lives and in foreign relations. Nevertheless, in advance of Modi\u2019s visit to the United States later this month, Indians are confident in relations between the two countries. Here are some of the key findings from a new <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2015\/09\/17\/the-modi-bounce\/\">Pew Research Center report<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Indians are overwhelmingly more positive about their country than they were two years ago.\u00a0<\/strong>More than half (56%) of Indians express satisfaction with their country\u2019s direction \u2013 up 27 percentage points from 2013. And nearly three-quarters say the current state of the economy is good, whereas only 57% said so two years ago.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2015\/09\/17\/the-modi-bounce\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e5e6d9\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e5e6d9;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"210\" height=\"408\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/09\/FT_15.09.17.Modi_.png?resize=210,408 210w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-24676 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/09\/FT_15.09.17.Modi_.png\" alt=\"FT_15.09.17.Modi\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Indians\u2019 love for Modi runs across the country.\u00a0<\/strong>Fully 87% of Indians have a favorable view of Modi, including a strong majority (68%) who see the prime minister <em>very<\/em> favorably. And among all respondents \u2013 men and women, the young and old, the urban and rural populations and members of the three national political parties \u2013 a majority holds very favorable views of the prime minister. One exception is supporters of the main opposition party, the Indian National Congress.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/09\/FT_15.09.17.AirPollution.png\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e4e0cc\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e4e0cc;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"404\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/09\/FT_15.09.17.AirPollution.png?resize=420,404 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-24681 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/09\/FT_15.09.17.AirPollution.png\" alt=\"Indians Worried About Air Pollution and Climate Change\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Environmental issues are a growing concern.\u00a0<\/strong>Indians express increasing concern about air pollution. Across seven national challenges, roughly three-in-four Indians say air pollution is a <em>very<\/em> big problem compared with about only half who voiced that view in 2014 \u2013 a rise of 22 percentage points. Coal, a major pollutant, accounts for approximately 71% of India\u2019s electricity production, according to most recent statistics from the World Bank.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, among seven global issues, Indians are most concerned about climate change. Over seven-in-ten Indians (73%) are <em>very<\/em> concerned about global climate change, compared with 49% who are concerned with global economic instability, the second-highest response.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Indians give a thumbs-up to the national government and the military.\u00a0<\/strong>The public\u2019s support for the central government (93%) parallels its high support for Modi and his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (both 87%). Since 2014, the government saw a 30 percentage point increase in those who say its influence is <em>very<\/em> good. And fully 95% say the military\u2019s influence is good \u2013 with nearly three-quarters saying it is <em>very<\/em> good.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2015\/09\/17\/the-modi-bounce\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ebe8de\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ebe8de;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"310\" height=\"319\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/09\/FT_15.09.17.IndiaUSPakistan.png?resize=310,319 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-24686 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/09\/FT_15.09.17.IndiaUSPakistan.png\" alt=\"Indians' Views of Other Countries\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Indians have high opinions of the U.S. and President Obama.\u00a0<\/strong>Later this month, U.S. President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Modi will meet in New York to discuss, among other issues, climate change \u2013 a top concern for Indians.
