While the pope is most comfortable speaking Spanish, the church\u2019s Latino population in the U.S. is growing and now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/09\/14\/a-closer-look-at-catholic-america\/\">makes up one-third of the flock<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/09\/22\/many-u-s-catholics-will-understand-pope-francis-spanish-language-mass\/ft_15-09-17_catholicforeignborn_420px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-273542\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eae4dc\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eae4dc;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"297\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/09\/FT_15.09.17_catholicForeignBorn_420px.png?resize=420,297 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-24762 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/09\/FT_15.09.17_catholicForeignBorn_420px.png\" alt=\"Catholic Hispanics More Likely to Use Spanish\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2013\/08\/13\/spanish-is-the-most-spoken-non-english-language-in-u-s-homes-even-among-non-hispanics\/\">Spanish is the most common language<\/a> spoken by Americans except for English, the pope will find a large share of his parishioners able to understand his message.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2014\/05\/07\/chapter-1-religious-affiliation-of-hispanics\/\">majority of all Hispanic adults<\/a> identify as Catholic and a large majority of Hispanic Catholics speak Spanish fluently, according to our 2013 National Survey of Latinos. Eight-in-ten Hispanic Catholics use mostly Spanish or are bilingual. In fact, they are more likely to be Spanish speakers than non-Catholic Hispanics (68%).<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/09\/22\/many-u-s-catholics-will-understand-pope-francis-spanish-language-mass\/ft_15-09-17_catholicforeignborn_310px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-273543\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eeebe1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eeebe1;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"310\" height=\"407\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/09\/FT_15.09.17_catholicForeignBorn_310px.png?resize=310,407 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-24766 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/09\/FT_15.09.17_catholicForeignBorn_310px.png\" alt=\"Foreign-Born Hispanics More Likely to Be Catholic\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One reason so many Hispanic Catholics speak Spanish is that two-thirds (65%) are foreign born. Nearly all Hispanic immigrants (95%) mainly use Spanish or are bilingual. By comparison, about half as many U.S.-born Hispanics (44%) mainly use Spanish or are bilingual.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The large number of immigrants in the U.S. from Mexico, a country with a strong Catholic tradition, contributes to the large presence of Hispanic immigrants within the church. Mexican immigrants make up 41% of U.S. Hispanic Catholic adults, while Mexican immigrants account for 34% of all Hispanic adults in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Hispanic immigrants have helped make the U.S. Catholic Church bilingual, the share of Hispanic Catholics who only attend worship services in Spanish has declined in recent years.\u00a0In 2013, 39% of Hispanic Catholic churchgoers said they attended worship services in Spanish every time, down from 60% in 2007.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A majority of all Hispanic adults identify as Catholic and a large majority of Hispanic Catholics speak Spanish fluently.
