Richardson\/The Denver Post via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven decades after the end of World War II, most American Jews say remembering the Holocaust is essential to what being Jewish means to them, personally.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 6 million European Jews (roughly two-thirds of the continent\u2019s Jewish population at the time) were killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust, which began in about 1941 and ended in May 1945 when Germany was defeated by the Allied Powers. Those surveyed also were asked about whether other aspects of Jewish life (such as observing Jewish law or being part of a Jewish community) were important to their Jewish identity.\u00a0 Only one of these eight other options, \u201cleading an ethical life,\u201d ranked almost as highly (69%) as \u201cremembering the Holocaust.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/02\/09\/europes-jewish-population\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/02\/FT_15.02.04_JewsEurope200px.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"621\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, due in large part to the Holocaust, there are only an estimated 1.4 million Jews remaining in Europe \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/02\/09\/europes-jewish-population\/\">down from an estimated 9.5 million<\/a> at the beginning of the war, in 1939.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anti-Semitism long predates the Holocaust and is still alive today. Indeed, in many European countries, including France and Germany, there have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/09\/24\/world\/europe\/europes-anti-semitism-comes-out-of-shadows.html?_r=2\">recently been attacks<\/a> on Jewish individuals as well as businesses and organizations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This lengthy history of hostilities, coupled with the longstanding sense within Judaism of a common destiny, helps explain why 63% of Americans Jews also say they have a special responsibility <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2013\/10\/01\/chapter-3-jewish-identity\/#pride-connectedness-and-responsibility\">to take care of Jews in need<\/a> around the world.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many American Jews also feel a strong personal connection to the state of Israel, which was\u00a0a haven for many Holocaust survivors and, in recent decades, has taken in Jewish refugees from places like Ethiopia and Russia. Today, 43% of American Jews say <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2013\/10\/01\/chapter-3-jewish-identity\/#what-does-it-mean-to-be-jewish\">caring about
