GOP front-runner Donald Trump recently added a twist when he suggested in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/post-partisan\/wp\/2016\/03\/21\/a-transcript-of-donald-trumps-meeting-with-the-washington-post-editorial-board\/?hpid=hp_hp-top-table-main_trump-1012pm:homepage\/story\">Washington Post interview<\/a> that, while NATO is \u201ca good thing to have,\u201d changes are needed because the U.S. is doing \u201call of the lifting\u201d and its allies need to do more. He cited in particular the handling of the face-off with Russia over Ukraine. In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/27\/us\/politics\/donald-trump-transcript.html?hp&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;clickSource=story-heading&amp;module=first-column-region&amp;region=top-news&amp;WT.nav=top-news\">subsequent interview<\/a> with The New York Times, he called NATO \u201cobsolete.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2015\/06\/10\/1-nato-public-opinion-wary-of-russia-leary-of-action-on-ukraine\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f2f2f2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f2f2f2;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"310\" height=\"350\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/03\/FT_16.03.28_NATO_support.png?resize=310,350 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-24179 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/03\/FT_16.03.28_NATO_support.png\" alt=\"FT_16.03.28_NATO_support\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just 49% of Americans had a favorable view of NATO in a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2015\/06\/10\/nato-publics-blame-russia-for-ukrainian-crisis-but-reluctant-to-provide-military-aid\/\">Pew Research Center survey conducted in spring 2015<\/a>, and those views have not changed much from previous years. Support includes 56% of Democrats but just 43% of the GOP. Notably, U.S. backing for the security alliance is the second lowest among eight NATO nations surveyed.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NATO alliance commits each member <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/is\/natohq\/topics_110496.htm?\">to come to the collective defense of a member<\/a> if it is attacked. During the confrontation with Russia over Ukraine last year, a majority of Americans (56%) were willing to <a href=\"http:\/\/pewrsr.ch\/1B1Safc\">fulfill this security commitment<\/a> if Russia got into a serious military conflict with a NATO ally. But that finding masked a partisan divide: Nearly seven-in-ten Republicans (69%), but only 47% of Democrats, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2015\/06\/10\/1-nato-public-opinion-wary-of-russia-leary-of-action-on-ukraine\/#major-partisan-split-in-the-u-s\">supported using force to aid<\/a> a NATO ally attacked by Russia.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2015\/06\/10\/nato-publics-blame-russia-for-ukrainian-crisis-but-reluctant-to-provide-military-aid\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e6e1d2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e6e1d2;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"310\" height=\"440\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/03\/FT_16.03.28_NATO_force.png?resize=310,440 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-24183 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/03\/FT_16.03.28_NATO_force.png\" alt=\"FT_16.03.28_NATO_force\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year\u2019s survey found that the U.S. and Canada were the only countries in which more than half of respondents backed using military force if Russia got into a serious conflict with a NATO ally. At least half of Germans, French and Italians said their countries should\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0use military force to defend a NATO ally if attacked by Russia. When it came specifically to aiding Ukraine, half or fewer in every NATO country surveyed supported the idea of the alliance sending arms to the Ukrainians.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a median of 68% of people in NATO countries surveyed believed the <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2015\/06\/10\/1-nato-public-opinion-wary-of-russia-leary-of-action-on-ukraine\/#mixed-views-on-coming-to-the-aid-of-nato-allies\">U.S. <em>would<\/em> defend allies<\/a> in such circumstances.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his Washington Post interview, Trump singled out Germany in particular for criticism about not carrying its weight. Most Americans agree that <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2015\/05\/07\/germany-and-the-united-states-reliable-allies\/\">Germany should boost its military contribution<\/a> in the world. More than half (54%) think Berlin should play a more active military role in maintaining peace and stability in the world, while only 37% say it should limit its role. Democrats (60%) more than Republicans (51%) back a more active German military.
