All of the remaining candidates from both parties <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfr.org\/trade\/future-us-trade-policy\/p36422\">have criticized the Trans-Pacific Partnership<\/a> (TPP), a recently negotiated trade deal between the U.S. and 11 Asia-Pacific nations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2016\/03\/31\/3-views-on-economy-government-services-trade\/#free-trade-agreements-viewed-positively-by-democratic-voters\">Pew Research Center survey<\/a> finds that criticism of trade deals in general is particularly strong among Republican and Republican-leaning supporters of GOP presidential contender Donald Trump who are registered voters. Americans ages 65 and older and men, especially white men, stand out among this group. Although Democratic candidates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-politics\/wp\/2016\/03\/12\/in-ohio-hillary-clinton-will-voice-support-for-tougher-trade-rules\/\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> and Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sanders.senate.gov\/newsroom\/video-audio\/defeat-the-trans-pacific-partnership\">Bernie Sanders<\/a> have both come out against TPP, majorities of their supporters believe trade agreements have been <em>good<\/em> for the country.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/ft_16-03-31-freetradeus2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-278991\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f4f3f0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f4f3f0;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"320\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/03\/FT_16.03.31.FreeTradeUS2.png?resize=420,320 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-24100 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/03\/FT_16.03.31.FreeTradeUS2.png\" alt=\"Americans continue to favor free trade agreements\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans\u2019 positive view of free trade deals has ebbed in recent years: 51% say such trade agreements between the U.S. and other countries have been a good thing for the country, while 39% believe they have been a bad thing. Favorable views of free trade accords peaked in 2014 (59%), and current positive assessments are similar to those measured in March 2011.<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=278982\"><img data-dominant-color=\"efece2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #efece2;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"310\" height=\"534\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/03\/FT_16.03.31.TrumpFreeTrade2.png?resize=310,534 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-24095 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/03\/FT_16.03.31.TrumpFreeTrade2.png\" alt=\"Trump supporters view free trade agreements as bad thing for U.S.\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Views of U.S. free trade agreements are more positive among Democratic and Democratic-leaning respondents (60% good thing vs. 30% bad thing) than Republican and Republican-leaners (40% good thing vs. 52% bad thing).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among registered Republican voters, Trump supporters stand out for their negative view of free trade: 67% of Trump supporters say free trade agreements have been a bad thing for the U.S., while just 27% say they have been a good thing. Republican supporters of Ted Cruz (48% good thing vs. 40% bad thing) and John Kasich (44% good thing vs. 46% bad thing) hold more mixed views.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By a 58% to 31% margin, more Clinton supporters among registered Democrats say free trade agreements have been a good thing than a bad thing for the U.S. Views among Democratic backers of Sanders are similar (55% good thing vs. 38% bad thing).<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/ft_16-03-31-freetradedemos\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-278981\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e8eadc\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e8eadc;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"310\" height=\"535\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/03\/FT_16.03.31.FreeTradeDemos.png?resize=310,535 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-24090 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/03\/FT_16.03.31.FreeTradeDemos.png\" alt=\"Gender, age and racial gaps on free trade agreements\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demographically, whites are split: 45% say trade deals are a good thing for the country, 46% say they are a bad thing. Blacks and Hispanics are clearly supportive of such agreements.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also a gender divide. Women (54% good thing vs. 34% bad thing) have a more favorable view of trade accords than do men, who are split (48% good thing vs. 45% bad thing). White men are particularly critical (52% bad thing vs. 40% good thing).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, there are age differences in views about trade agreements. Young people (those 18 to 29) see such accords as positive (67% good thing vs. 25% bad thing).
