And this growth is expected to accelerate: Projections suggest there will be 3.7 million centenarians across the globe in 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While centenarians make up a small share of the world\u2019s older population, their proportion is growing. In 1990 there were 2.9 centenarians for every 10,000 adults ages 65 and older around the world. That share grew to 7.4 by 2015 and is projected to rise to 23.6 by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 1990, the population of those ages 80 and older \u2013 the oldest segments of the 65-plus population \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/content\/dam\/Census\/library\/publications\/2016\/demo\/p95-16-1.pdf\">has grown more rapidly<\/a> than that of the younger segments, those ages 65-79. This faster growth is driven by improved life expectancies among those 65 and older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2016\/04\/21\/worlds-centenarian-population-projected-to-grow-eightfold-by-2050\/ft_16-04-20_centenarian_us-png\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-24019\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e6e8e5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e6e8e5;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"410\" height=\"355\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/04\/FT_16.04.20_centenarian_US.png?resize=410,355 410w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/04\/FT_16.04.20_centenarian_US.png\" alt=\"U.S. has most centenarians overall in 2015, but fewer per capita than other top countries \" class=\"wp-image-24019 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Estimates of the centenarian population can be hard to come by due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/cen2010\/reports\/c2010sr-03.pdf\">misreporting and data processing issues<\/a>. It is often difficult to verify the ages reported, as centenarians might <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prb.org\/Publications\/Articles\/2003\/Age100andCounting.aspx\">not have birth records to confirm their age<\/a>. But the available data suggest that the U.S. leads the world in terms of the sheer number of centenarians, followed by Japan, China, India and Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China and India make the list mainly because of their large populations. Currently centenarians make up a very small share, proportionally, of these relatively young countries. But they make up a larger share of the total populations of <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/05\/21\/americans-are-aging-but-not-as-fast-as-people-in-germany-italy-and-japan\/\">rapidly aging<\/a> Japan and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2015\/05\/21\/1-demographic-and-financial-profiles-of-people-in-the-u-s-germany-and-italy\/\">Italy<\/a>. Today, there are 4.8 centenarians for every 10,000 people in Japan and 4.1 in Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By comparison, in the U.S. \u2013 which is aging at a slower rate than Japan and Italy, partly <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2015\/05\/21\/1-demographic-and-financial-profiles-of-people-in-the-u-s-germany-and-italy\/\">due to its higher fertility and immigration rates<\/a> \u2013 there are now 2.2 centenarians per 10,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By 2050, China is expected to have the largest centenarian population, followed by Japan, the U.S., Italy and India, which will also remain in the top five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2016\/04\/21\/worlds-centenarian-population-projected-to-grow-eightfold-by-2050\/ft_16-04-20_centenarian_chinajapan-png\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-24023\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f1f2f0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f1f2f0;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/04\/FT_16.04.20_centenarian_ChinaJapan.png?resize=480,319 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/04\/FT_16.04.20_centenarian_ChinaJapan.png?resize=640,425 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/04\/FT_16.04.20_centenarian_ChinaJapan.png\" alt=\"Number of centenarians in China and Japan expected to surpass number in U.S. \" class=\"wp-image-24023 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"s1\">Japan and Italy will have the highest proportion of centenarians to the total population. But among these top five&nbsp;centenarian countries, the centenarian share will grow fastest in China, where the population is expected to age rapidly in coming decades.<\/span> By 2050, there will be 4.6 centenarians per 10,000 people in China, 13 times today\u2019s very small share. In Japan and Italy, the proportion of centenarians to the total population will increase ninefold to 41.1 and 38.3 centenarians per 10,000 people, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The centenarian share of the populations of the U.S. and India will grow less rapidly. There will be 9.7 centenarians per 10,000 people in the U.S. and 1.2 in India by 2050.
