But when it comes to a broader strategy to defeat terrorism around the world, many Europeans fear relying too much on military force will create hatred that leads to more terrorism.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=282409\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e5e1ce\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e5e1ce;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"489\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/08\/FT_16.08.22_terrorismGlobal_useforce.png?resize=480,367 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/08\/FT_16.08.22_terrorismGlobal_useforce.png?resize=640,489 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-23896 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/08\/FT_16.08.22_terrorismGlobal_useforce.png\" data-attachid=\"282409\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2016\/06\/13\/europeans-face-the-world-divided\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pew Research Center survey<\/a> conducted this spring, before the most recent terror attacks in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/07\/14\/europe\/nice-france-truck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">France<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/07\/24\/world\/ansbach-germany-blast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Germany<\/a>, found that a median of 76% across 10 European countries saw ISIS as a major threat to their nation and 69% <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2016\/06\/28\/americas-international-image\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">supported<\/a> U.S.-led military actions against the group.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked about defeating terrorism more widely, only 41% were convinced that using overwhelming military force was the best strategy. A larger 53% thought relying too much on force\u00a0would be counterproductive.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a class=\"image-box\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2016\/08\/22\/europeans-back-anti-isis-campaign-but-have-doubts-about-use-of-force-in-fighting-terror\/ft_16-08-17_terrorismglobal_isisfight\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-282411\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f2f2f1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f2f2f1;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"537\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/08\/FT_16.08.17_terrorismGlobal_ISISfight.png?resize=420,537 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-23900 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/08\/FT_16.08.17_terrorismGlobal_ISISfight.png\" data-attachid=\"282411\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In nine of 10 European Union nations surveyed, more than half supported U.S. military action against ISIS, while many simultaneously expressed concern about depending too much on military force as a strategy to defeat terrorism.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Substantial shares of those who were worried about overreliance on force \u2013 ranging from 39% to 77% \u2013 supported the U.S.-led military actions against ISIS. But those who believed, in principle, that using overwhelming force is the best way to combat terrorism were much more likely to support U.S.-led military efforts against ISIS.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This gap in attitudes was especially large in Italy, where 83% of people who favored the general use of military force supported U.S.-led actions in Syria and Iraq, compared with just 50% of those who were concerned about military action leading to more terrorism. Similar differences of roughly 30 points were evident in Greece (70% vs. 39%), Spain (78% vs. 50%) and Hungary (66% vs. 39%).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>NOTE (April 2017): After publication, the weight for the Netherlands data was revised to correct percentages for two regions.
