The number of deportations fell for the second\u00a0year in a row and reached its lowest level since 2007, during the George W. Bush administration.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decline in deportations occurred among non-criminal and criminal immigrants alike. Deportations of immigrants without a criminal conviction fell from 247,000 in 2014 to 193,000 in 2015, a 22% drop and the first in four years. Deportations of immigrants with a criminal conviction fell 17% between fiscal 2014 and 2015, from 168,000 to 140,000. It is only the third time that the number of deportations of immigrants with a criminal conviction has fallen since at least 1981. (Fiscal 2016 data are not yet available.)<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several factors have contributed to the overall decline in deportations. The number of apprehensions at the U.S.-Mexico border, for instance, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/BP%20Total%20Apps%20FY1925-FY2015.pdf\">falling for some time<\/a>: The Border Patrol made 408,870 apprehensions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/southwest-border-unaccompanied-children\/fy-2016\">fiscal 2016, a figure higher than the number of apprehensions the year before<\/a> but still among the fewest since 1971.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One reason for the decline in apprehensions in recent years is <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/hispanic\/2015\/09\/28\/modern-immigration-wave-brings-59-million-to-u-s-driving-population-growth-and-change-through-2065\/#the-profile-of-todays-newly-arrived-is-markedly-different-than-that-of-new-arrivals-in-previous-decades\">an overall decrease in the number of immigrants<\/a> (both legal and unauthorized) coming to the U.S., especially from Mexico. (A Pew Research Center analysis shows that between 2009 and 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/hispanic\/2015\/11\/19\/more-mexicans-leaving-than-coming-to-the-u-s\/\">more Mexicans were returning home<\/a> to Mexico than were arriving in the U.S.) Meanwhile, stricter border enforcement by the U.S. has also played a role in this trend.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Obama administration recently changed its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/news\/releases\/dhs-releases-end-fiscal-year-2015-statistics\">deportation enforcement priorities<\/a>, focusing exclusively on those who have been convicted of a crime; those deemed a threat to the public safety; and those who have recently crossed the border. Last year (2015) marked a major shift on this front, with those convicted of an aggravated felony making up 81% of all convicted criminals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/removal-statistics\">deported<\/a> by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, up from 51% in fiscal 2014. This change, along with a low level of cooperation from state and local law enforcement agencies, also may have contributed to the decline in the number of criminal deportations in fiscal 2015.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 2.8 million immigrants have been deported by the Obama administration between 2009 and 2015, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2014\/10\/02\/u-s-deportations-of-immigrants-reach-record-high-in-2013\/\">record 435,000<\/a> in 2013 alone, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of Department of Homeland Security data. By comparison, the Bush administration deported 2 million immigrants between 2001 and 2008.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. immigration policy was one of the most discussed issues in this year\u2019s presidential campaign, with Donald Trump making it a key part of his campaign. After his election, President-elect Trump has said he will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/15\/us\/politics\/donald-trump-deport-immigrants.html?_r=0\">deport 2 to 3 million
