Last March, 46% <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2016\/03\/28\/garland-nomination-to-supreme-court-gets-positive-reception-from-public\/\">favored Senate confirmation of Garland<\/a>, 30% were opposed and 24% had no opinion.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Garland was Obama\u2019s pick to fill the seat vacated by the late Justice Antonin Scalia. His nomination was never considered by the Senate. Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/24\/us\/politics\/supreme-court-nomination-obama.html\">declined to hold hearings<\/a> on Garland in order to leave the seat open so the next president could choose Scalia\u2019s successor.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a class=\"image-box\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2017\/02\/16\/more-favor-than-oppose-gorsuch-nomination\/ft_17-02-16_supremecourt_gorsuch-garland\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-288271\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e3ddcc\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e3ddcc;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"398\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/02\/FT_17.02.16_supremeCourt_gorsuch-garland.png?resize=420,398 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-23108 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/02\/FT_17.02.16_supremeCourt_gorsuch-garland.png\" alt=\"\" data-attachid=\"288271\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As was the case with Garland, there is a substantial partisan gap over Gorsuch\u2019s nomination. Nearly eight-in-ten Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (78%) believe the Senate should vote to confirm Gorsuch. Only 9% of Republicans are against his confirmation, while 13% offer no opinion.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, Democrats and Democratic leaners oppose Gorsuch\u2019s confirmation by a roughly two-to-one margin (50% vs. 23%), while roughly a quarter (27%) do not offer an opinion.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s partisan dynamic is the inverse of partisan views of Garland\u2019s nomination last March. At that time, 67% of Democrats and just 23% of Republicans supported his confirmation.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a class=\"image-box\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2017\/02\/16\/more-favor-than-oppose-gorsuch-nomination\/ft_17-02-16_supremecourt_opponents\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-288270\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ededed\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ededed;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"310\" height=\"350\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/02\/FT_17.02.16_supremeCourt_opponents.png?resize=310,350 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-23105 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/02\/FT_17.02.16_supremeCourt_opponents.png\" alt=\"\" data-attachid=\"288270\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the new survey, those who said Gorsuch should not be confirmed were asked in an open-ended question why they opposed his confirmation. Among the roughly one-third of the public that said this, 37% mention Gorsuch\u2019s ideology or partisanship as the reason why they oppose his confirmation.
