Critics of Silicon Valley have cited\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/06\/21\/technology\/uber-ceo-travis-kalanick.html?mcubz=1\">high-profile cases<\/a>\u00a0as evidence that the industry has fostered a hostile workplace culture. For their part, tech companies point to their <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/284517-white-house-pressures-30-tech-companies-to-sign-diversity-pledge\">commitment to increasing workforce diversity<\/a>, even as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/09\/23\/technology\/silicon-valley-men-backlash-gender-scandals.html?smid=tw-share&amp;_r=0\">some employees claim<\/a> the industry is increasingly hostile to white males.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a class=\"image-box\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2017\/10\/10\/women-are-more-concerned-than-men-about-gender-discrimination-in-tech-industry\/ft_17-10-10_techdiscrimination_womenmorethanmen\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-295780\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e6e7ea\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e6e7ea;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"399\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/10\/FT_17.10.10_TechDiscrimination_Womenmorethanmen.png?resize=420,399 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-22498 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/10\/FT_17.10.10_TechDiscrimination_Womenmorethanmen.png\" alt=\"\" data-attachid=\"295780\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new survey finds that roughly three-quarters of Americans (73%) say discrimination against women is a problem in the tech industry, with 37% citing it as a major problem and an equal share citing it as a minor one. But 44% of women say it is a major problem, compared with just 29% of men. And roughly a third of men (32%) say discrimination against women is <em>not<\/em> a problem, compared with 17% of women.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Younger women are more likely than older women to view gender discrimination as a major problem in the tech industry. About half (49%) of women younger than 50 say this, compared with 39% of women 50 and older.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women who work in computer jobs are also more likely than men in these jobs to consider gender discrimination a major problem in the tech industry (43% to 31%); about twice as many men (32%) as women (15%) who work in these jobs say gender discrimination is not a problem in the industry. (Computer jobs include positions in software development or data science, and include some who work in the technology industry and some who work in other sectors.)<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey results are in keeping with earlier research about perceptions of gender discrimination in society as a whole. Previous <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2015\/01\/14\/chapter-3-obstacles-to-female-leadership\/\">Pew Research Center surveys<\/a> have shown that women are significantly more likely than men to say there is gender discrimination in our society today. In a 2014 survey, 65% of women said there is at least some discrimination against women, a view shared by 48% of men.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the most part, Americans do not see gender discrimination as more widespread in the tech industry than in others. More than half (57%) say there is about the same amount of discrimination against women in tech as there is against women in other industries. About a quarter of adults (27%) say there is more discrimination against women in the tech industry, and 14% say there is less.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there are gender differences on this question, too. A third of women, compared with 19% of men, say there is more gender discrimination against women in tech than in other industries.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Younger adults (ages 18 to 49) (31%) are more inclined than those 50 and older (22%) to see gender discrimination as particularly prevalent in the tech industry.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Blacks, Hispanics also more likely to perceive discrimination<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a class=\"image-box\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2017\/10\/10\/women-are-more-concerned-than-men-about-gender-discrimination-in-tech-industry\/ft_17-10-10_techdiscrimination_roughlytwothirds\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-295779\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dde0e3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dde0e3;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"411\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/10\/FT_17.10.10_TechDiscrimination_Roughlytwothirds.png?resize=420,411 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-22494 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/10\/FT_17.10.10_TechDiscrimination_Roughlytwothirds.png\" alt=\"\" data-attachid=\"295779\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey also asked about perceptions of discrimination against two other groups underrepresented in the tech industry: blacks and Hispanics. (Though some have also raised concerns about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/Business\/2016\/0928\/In-its-drive-for-diversity-is-the-tech-industry-neglecting-Asians\">how Asians are treated<\/a> in the tech industry, the survey questions were limited to perceived treatment of blacks and Hispanics.)<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A majority of blacks (64%) say discrimination against blacks and Hispanics is a major problem in the tech industry, and half of Hispanics agree. Only 21% of whites say this is a major problem. At the same time, 37% of whites say such discrimination <em>isn\u2019t<\/em> a problem, compared with 11% of blacks and 12% of Hispanics.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blacks and Hispanics are also much more likely than whites to say there is more discrimination against blacks and Hispanics in the tech industry than in other industries. Four-in-ten blacks and 35% of Hispanics say this, compared with 11% of whites.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>About the survey: These are some of the findings from a survey conducted among a nationally representative sample of 4,914 adults, ages 18 and older, from July 11-Aug. 10, 2017. The survey, which was conducted online in English and in Spanish through GfK\u2019s Knowledge Panel, included an oversample of employed adults working in science, technology, engineering and math-related fields.
