{"id":11792,"date":"2017-09-25T07:00:22","date_gmt":"2017-09-25T12:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/%year%\/%monthnum%\/%day%\/shows-and-films-about-crime-medicine-help-foster-a-positive-view-of-scientists-say-many-americans\/"},"modified":"2024-04-14T03:16:07","modified_gmt":"2024-04-14T08:16:07","slug":"shows-and-films-about-crime-medicine-help-foster-a-positive-view-of-scientists-say-many-americans","status":"publish","type":"short-read","link":"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2017\/09\/25\/shows-and-films-about-crime-medicine-help-foster-a-positive-view-of-scientists-say-many-americans\/","title":{"rendered":"Shows and films about crime, medicine help foster a positive view of scientists, say many Americans"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a class=\"image-box\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2017\/09\/25\/shows-and-films-about-crime-medicine-help-foster-a-positive-view-of-scientists-say-many-americans\/ft_17-09-21_scienceshows_favorable\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-295380\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e7e4e3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e7e4e3;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"418\" height=\"501\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/09\/FT_17.09.21_scienceShows_favorable.png?resize=418,501 418w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-22862 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/09\/FT_17.09.21_scienceShows_favorable.png\" alt=\"\" data-attachid=\"295380\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"p1 wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"s1\">The general news media and specialty publications are major ways most Americans get their information about science.<\/span> But many also are exposed to scientific subjects through movies and television shows \u2013 and they come away from these fictional portraits with a positive impression of working in science, technology and medicine.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly eight-in-ten Americans (81%) say they at least sometimes watch one or more of three types of science-related entertainment shows and movies: those focusing on criminal investigations, ones about hospitals and medical settings, or science fiction, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2017\/09\/20\/most-americans-see-science-related-entertainment-shows-and-movies-in-either-a-neutral-or-positive-light\/\">Pew Research Center survey<\/a> conducted in May and June.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many of these viewers come away with a favorable view of scientists, they also regard the TV shows and movies as focusing more on entertainment than getting the facts right.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although such popular entertainment can inform, many in the scientific community have worried over how the media can also create misconceptions \u2013 such as by creating <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/02\/06\/133497696\/is-the-csi-effect-influencing-courtrooms\">unrealistic standards for forensic evidence<\/a> in the public mind or by perpetuating stereotypes of the \u201cmad scientist\u201d clad in a white lab coat.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A majority of frequent viewers of criminal investigation shows (56%) and about half who frequently watch medicine-oriented programs (51%) say these shows give a positive impression of working in science, technology and medicine.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, although contemporary science fiction sometimes presents a dystopian view of the future, 44% of frequent viewers of such movies and TV shows say the genre offers a favorable impression of the future of science, technology and medicine. Only 15% say that science fiction creates an unfavorable impression.<\/p>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-photo size-full wp-image-295379 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/FT_17.09.21_scienceShows_understanding.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"455\" data-attachid=\"295379\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Majorities of Americans realize these types of science-related entertainment are not entirely accurate in their portrayal of science, the Center\u2019s survey finds. By roughly two-to-one, Americans think medicine-oriented shows and movies prioritize entertainment (66%) over accuracy (32%). Similarly, Americans say crime shows focus more on entertainment than portraying science, technology and medicine in a realistic way by a margin of 62% to 35%.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, the majority of Americans don\u2019t believe entertainment media undermine their understanding of science, technology and medicine. About half of frequent viewers of crime-focused shows (51%) say these programs have no effect on their own understanding of science-related topics. More say these shows help than hurt their understanding by a margin of 40% to 9%.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many Americans are exposed to science through TV and movies, and
