Among religious \u201cnones\u201d \u2013 those who identify religiously as atheist, agnostic or \u201cnothing in particular\u201d \u2013 about six-in-ten (62%) say they think a person\u2019s gender is <em>not<\/em> necessarily determined by the sex they are assigned at birth.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"p1 wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"s1\">The new analysis is drawn from a recent survey that showed the American public was also deeply divided <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2017\/11\/08\/transgender-issues-divide-republicans-and-democrats\/\"><span class=\"s2\">along <i>partisan <\/i>lines<\/span><\/a> on the question.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among Christians, white evangelical Protestants (84%) are most likely to say that gender is determined by sex at birth. Many black Protestants (59%) and white mainline Protestants (55%) also feel this way. Catholics are divided on the question, with 51% saying gender is a function of one\u2019s birth sex, while 46% say it is possible for someone to be of a gender different from their sex at birth.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a class=\"image-box\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2017\/11\/27\/views-of-transgender-issues-divide-along-religious-lines\/ft_17-11-21_religiontransgender_degree420px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-297054\"><img data-dominant-color=\"cee1e8\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #cee1e8;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"444\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/11\/FT_17.11.21_religionTransgender_degree420px.png?resize=420,444 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-22482 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/11\/FT_17.11.21_religionTransgender_degree420px.png\" alt=\"\" data-attachid=\"297054\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Religious differences also extend to questions about societal acceptance of transgender people. Most white evangelical Protestants (61%) say society has \u201cgone too far\u201d when it comes to accepting people who are transgender. And <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2016\/09\/28\/where-the-public-stands-on-religious-liberty-vs-nondiscrimination\/\">Pew Research Center\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2016\/09\/28\/where-the-public-stands-on-religious-liberty-vs-nondiscrimination\/\">polling<\/a> conducted in the summer of 2016 found that seven-in-ten white evangelical Protestants think that transgender people should be required to use the public restrooms that correspond with their birth gender.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a class=\"image-box\" href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2017\/11\/27\/views-of-transgender-issues-divide-along-religious-lines\/ft_17-11-22_transgenderreligion\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-297056\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ebeaea\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ebeaea;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"415\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/11\/FT_17.11.22_TransgenderReligion.png?resize=200,415 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-22487 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/11\/FT_17.11.22_TransgenderReligion.png\" alt=\"\" data-attachid=\"297056\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By comparison, other Christian groups are more evenly divided on these questions. And most religious \u201cnones\u201d (57%) say society has \u201cnot gone far enough\u201d when it comes to accepting people who are transgender, and that transgender individuals should be allowed to use public restrooms corresponding to their current gender identity (70%).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, the new survey finds that roughly a third of Christians (34%) say they personally know someone who is transgender, ranging from 25% of white evangelicals to 41% of white mainline Protestants and the same share of black Protestants.
