While most Africans brought to the New World to be slaves were not Christians when they arrived, many of them and their descendants <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/aia\/part2\/2narr2.html\">embraced Christianity<\/a>, finding comfort in the Biblical message of spiritual equality and deliverance. In post-Civil War America, a burgeoning black church played a key role strengthening African American communities and in providing key support to the civil rights movement.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Black History Month, here are five facts about the religious lives of African Americans.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Roughly eight-in-ten (79%) African Americans <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/religious-landscape-study\/racial-and-ethnic-composition\/black\/\"><strong>self-identify as Christian<\/strong><\/a>, as do <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/religious-landscape-study\/racial-and-ethnic-composition\/white\/\">seven-in-ten whites<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/religious-landscape-study\/racial-and-ethnic-composition\/latino\/\">77% of Latinos<\/a>, according to Pew Research Center\u2019s 2014 Religious Landscape Study. Most black Christians and about half of <em>all<\/em> African Americans (53%) are associated with historically black Protestant churches, according to the study. Today, <strong>the largest historically black church in the U.S. is the <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalbaptist.com\/about-us\/index.html\"><strong>National Baptist Convention U.S.A<\/strong><\/a><strong>. Black Americans (83%) are more likely to say they believe in God with absolute certainty than whites (61%) and Latinos (59%).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The share of African Americans who identify as religiously unaffiliated has increased in recent years<\/strong>, mirroring national trends. In 2007, when the first <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/files\/2013\/05\/report-religious-landscape-study-full.pdf\">Religious Landscape Study<\/a> was conducted, only 12% of black Americans said they were religiously unaffiliated\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">\u2014 that is, atheist, agnostic or \u201cnothing in particular.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>By the time the 2014 Landscape Study was conducted, that number had grown to 18%. As with the general population, younger African American adults are more likely than older African Americans to be unaffiliated. Three-in-ten (29%) African Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 say they are unaffiliated compared with only 7% of black adults 65 and older who say this.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Older African Americans are more likely than younger black adults to be associated with historically black Protestant churches.<\/strong> While 63% of the Silent Generation (born between 1928 and 1945) say they identify with historically black denominations, only 41% of black Millennials say the same.
