The church was founded after the American Revolution as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Episcopal-Church-in-the-United-States-of-America\">successor to the Church of England in the new country<\/a>. It has often been seen as the religious institution most closely associated with the American establishment, producing many of the nation\u2019s most important leaders in politics and business. Even today, the seat of the presiding bishop of the church, the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., is sometimes called \u201cAmerica\u2019s church.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the eve of the Episcopal Church\u2019s 2018 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.generalconvention.org\/schedules2018\/\">General Convention<\/a>, here are five facts about Episcopalians:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>More <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2017\/01\/20\/almost-all-presidents-have-been-christians\/\"><strong>presidents have been Episcopalian<\/strong><\/a><strong> \u2013 11 \u2013 than any other Christian denomination.<\/strong> Several of the nation\u2019s earliest presidents, including George Washington, James Madison and James Monroe, were Episcopalians. But since the death of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1945, the only two Episcopalian presidents have been Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2018\/07\/02\/5-facts-about-episcopalians\/ft_18-07-02_episcopalian_presidents640px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-303926\"><img data-dominant-color=\"c8c1bd\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #c8c1bd;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"381\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2018\/06\/FT_18.07.02_episcopalian_presidents640px.png?resize=480,286 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2018\/06\/FT_18.07.02_episcopalian_presidents640px.png?resize=640,381 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-21740 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2018\/06\/FT_18.07.02_episcopalian_presidents640px.png\" alt=\"11 presidents have been Episcopalians\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><strong>Roughly 1% of U.S. adults now identify as Episcopalians, <\/strong>according to Pew Research Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/religious-landscape-study\/\">2014 Religious Landscape Study<\/a><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0 The share of Americans who identify as Episcopalian is relatively unchanged since 2007, even as the share of those in the mainline Protestant tradition (of which the Episcopal Church is a part) and Christians as a whole have declined as a share of the population.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Compared to the general public overall, Episcopalians are older. For example, 35% of Episcopalians are ages 65 or older, compared with 18% of U.S. adults. <\/strong>And just 9% of adults who identify as Episcopalian are younger than 30, compared with 22% of U.S. adults overall.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/07\/27\/the-most-and-least-racially-diverse-u-s-religious-groups\/\">Nine-in-ten Episcopalians are white<\/a>.<\/strong> That\u2019s well above the comparable share of U.S. adults overall (66%). Just 4% of Episcopalians are black.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Most<\/strong> <strong>Episcopalians are supportive of gay rights. <\/strong>Large majorities in 2014 said homosexuality should be accepted by society (83%) and that they favor legalizing same-sex marriage (74%). At the Episcopal Church\u2019s 2003 General Convention, Gene Robinson became the first priest in an openly gay relationship to be confirmed as a bishop in the worldwide Anglican Communion (of which the Episcopal Church is a member). And at the 2015 General Convention, the Episcopal Church <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/acts-of-faith\/wp\/2015\/07\/01\/why-the-episcopal-church-is-still-debating-gay-marriage\/?utm_term=.9455c4501b06\">authorized its clergy to conduct same-sex weddings<\/a>.
