Last January, the public had a more optimistic view of the coming year, with 61% saying 2018 would be better than 2017.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pew Research Center survey, conducted Jan. 9-14 (before the partial shutdown of the federal government ended), finds that expectations for the year ahead have declined among members of both parties.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As has been the case since Donald Trump\u2019s election, Republicans are far more optimistic than Democrats about the coming year.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven-in-ten Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (70%) say 2019 will be better than 2018. By comparison, just 32% of Democrats and Democratic leaners say they expect this year to be better than last year.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But members of both parties \u2013 particularly Republicans \u2013 are less optimistic than they were about 2018, when 88% of Republicans and 42% of Democrats said the year ahead would be better than the one that had just ended.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2019\/01\/29\/republicans-democrats-both-see-less-reason-for-optimism-in-2019-than-they-did-in-2018\/ft_19-01-29_betterworse_manyrepublicanspointto\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-310655\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FT_19.01.29_BetterWorse_ManyRepublicanspointto.png\" alt=\"Many Republicans point to Trump, economy as reasons for optimism; Democrats cite House majority\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump continues to be a major factor in partisans\u2019 expectations for the coming year \u2013 both positive and negative.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked <em>why<\/em> they think 2019 will be better than 2018, 24% of Republicans volunteer Trump as the reason, while 20% cite the economy. Roughly one-in-ten (12%) point to expectations around border security and immigration, including the possible expansion of the U.S.-Mexico border wall.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The share of Republicans who are optimistic about the coming year and mention Trump as a reason is <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2018\/01\/18\/3-outlook-for-2018-views-of-political-compromise\/\">roughly the same as in 2018<\/a>, but a smaller share now mentions the economy than did so last year (36% then, 20% now).<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2019\/01\/29\/republicans-democrats-both-see-less-reason-for-optimism-in-2019-than-they-did-in-2018\/ft_19-01-29_betterworse_manydemocrats_2\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-310667\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FT_19.01.29_BetterWorse_ManyDemocrats_2.png\" alt=\"Many Democrats who say 2019 will be worse than 2018 cite Trump as the main reason\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the relatively small share of Democrats (32%) who are optimistic about 2019, the most commonly cited reasons are the Democrats\u2019 new House majority or the party\u2019s ability to provide a check on Trump, cited by 27%. Another 11% of Democrats say the year ahead will be better because 2019 can\u2019t be worse than 2018; a larger share (16%) expresses general optimism about the coming year.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump is by far the top reason for pessimism among the 56% of Democrats who expect this year to be worse than last year.
