There were no partisan differences in this assessment: Nearly identical shares of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (90%) and Republicans and Republican leaners (91%) said this. There <em>were<\/em> partisan differences over whether several other qualities \u2013 such as maintaining a tone of civility and respect and working well under pressure \u2013 are essential for political leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While partisans agree about the importance of political leaders\u2019 honesty and ethical behavior in general, they disagree sharply when asked about honesty and ethical behavior in the context of Trump and his administration, as they have for other elected officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2019\/01\/30\/partisans-agree-political-leaders-should-be-honest-and-ethical-disagree-whether-trump-fits-the-bill\/ft_19-01-24_honestyinpolitics_2\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eeebe1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"720\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2019\/01\/FT_19.01.24_HonestyInPolitics_2.png?resize=480,557 480w, https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2019\/01\/FT_19.01.24_HonestyInPolitics_2.png?resize=620,720 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2019\/01\/FT_19.01.24_HonestyInPolitics_2.png\" alt=\"Trust in what Trump says varies sharply by party\" class=\"wp-image-21032 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eeebe1; width:310px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2019\/01\/18\/1-views-of-trump-2\/#trumps-statements-less-trusted-than-those-of-previous-presidents\">separate Pew Research Center survey<\/a> conducted in January, 94% of Democrats say they trust what Trump says <em>less<\/em> than what prior presidents said, while 58% of Republicans say they trust what Trump says <em>more<\/em> than what prior presidents said. In surveys dating back to the Clinton administration, Pew Research Center has asked Americans whether they saw the current president as trustworthy or not. While some chief executives have fared better on this measure overall than others, a common theme emerges: People generally view presidents from their own party as trustworthy \u2013 and presidents from the other party as not trustworthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This largely parallels <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2018\/08\/01\/trumps-approval-ratings-so-far-are-unusually-stable-and-deeply-partisan\/\">partisan differences in presidential approval<\/a>: In the Center\u2019s survey this January, 96% of Democrats disapprove of the way Trump is handling his job as president, while 80% of Republicans
