The <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2019\/07\/08\/u-s-hispanic-population-reached-new-high-in-2018-but-growth-has-slowed\/ft_19-07-08_hispanicpopulation_puerto-rico-populaton-decreased-2018_3\/\">3.9% decline<\/a> in 2018 represents the largest year-to-year drop since 1950, the first year for which annual data is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of people in Puerto Rico has dropped by 632,000 since its peak in 2004. Even before the hurricanes hit, Puerto Rico\u2019s population was expected to drop to less than 3 million by 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/censo.estadisticas.pr\/Comunicado-de-prensa\/2017-09-17t125335\">according to projections<\/a> published in 2017. The mid-2000s marked a turning point for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/10\/05\/behind-puerto-rico-financial-crisis-before-hurricane-maria.html\">island\u2019s economy<\/a>, when it entered a recession from which it has not recovered. Since then, many Puerto Ricans have <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/10\/14\/puerto-ricans-leave-in-record-numbers-for-mainland-u-s\/\">left the island<\/a> for the U.S. mainland, <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2018\/10\/12\/hispanic-voter-registration-rises-in-florida-but-role-of-puerto-ricans-remains-unclear\/\">in particular for Florida<\/a>, often citing <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2016\/03\/24\/historic-population-losses-continue-across-puerto-rico\/\">job- and family-related<\/a> reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are key facts on how Puerto Rico\u2019s population has changed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-310-wide\"><img decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/FT_19.07.26_PuertoRico_Puerto-Rico-experienced-record-net-migration-loss-2018_2.png?w=310\" alt=\"Puerto Rico experienced a record net migration loss in 2018\" class=\"wp-image-318008\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>[bignumber]Puerto Rico saw a historic net migration loss in 2018, a year after hurricanes Maria and Irma. <\/strong>From 2017 to 2018, 123,000 more people left than moved to Puerto Rico, compared with 78,000 the previous year. Between 2000 and 2009, the net migration loss was no more than 6,000 each year. These losses significantly increased in 2011 and have grown since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>[bignumber]Puerto Rico\u2019s population last saw modest increases in the 1990s, and in recent years has experienced accelerating declines. <\/strong>Losses started around the beginning of the island\u2019s economic recession in 2006 and have continued since then. From 2015 to 2018, Puerto Rico\u2019s population decreased by 2.7% per year on average, compared with 1.4% from 2010 to 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-640-wide\"><img decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/FT_19.07.26_PuertoRico_Puerto-Rico-population-lowest-point-since-1979_2.png?w=640\" alt=\"Puerto Rico's population is at its lowest point since 1979\" class=\"wp-image-318003\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-420-wide\"><img decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/FT_19.07.26_PuertoRico_Between-2017-2018-Puerto-Rico-experienced-historic-population-loss.png?w=420\" alt=\"Between 2017 and 2018, Puerto Rico experienced a historic population loss\" class=\"wp-image-317960\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>[bignumber]Every county, or <em>municipio,<\/em> in Puerto Rico lost population in 2018, with each seeing at least a 2% decrease. <\/strong>The <em>municipios <\/em>with the largest populations also experienced some of the fastest rates of decline. San Juan (population 321,000), Bayam\u00f3n (170,000), Carolina (148,000) and Ponce (133,000) all had decreases of 4% or more. Las Mar\u00edas had the island\u2019s largest decrease, with a decline of more than 5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>[bignumber]Over the past decade, only one<em> municipio<\/em> on the island did not suffer population loss. <\/strong>Gurabo saw its population increase by 4%, from 44,000 in 2008 to 46,000 in 2018. From 2008 to 2018, the <em>municipios<\/em> of Ceiba (-24%), Lares (-22%), Gu\u00e1nica (-22%), Ponce (-22%) and Pe\u00f1uelas (-22%) experienced the largest percentage drops in population. Declines were widespread \u2013 33 of the island\u2019s 78 <em>municipios<\/em> had a population decrease of at least 15% during this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>[bignumber]Puerto Rico\u2019s median age has increased over the past decade, <\/strong>rising from 36 in 2008 to 43 in 2018. By comparison, Hispanics on the mainland (the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia) had a median age of 30 in 2018, up from 27 in 2008. Overall, 81% of the island\u2019s population was ages 18 and older in 2018, up from 75% in 2008. The share who were 65 and older increased from 14% in 2008 to 21% in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-420-wide\"><img decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/FT_19.07.26_PuertoRico_Historic-population-losses-in-Puerto-Rico-extend-across-island_2.png?w=420\" alt=\"Historic population losses in Puerto Rico extend across the island\" class=\"wp-image-318002\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>[bignumber]The number of births in Puerto Rico has decreased in the past decade.<\/strong> In 2018, 24,000 births took place on the island, down 47% from 2008 (46,000 births). This is a much larger rate of decrease than among Hispanics on the U.S. mainland. Hispanic births on the mainland had a modest decrease (3%) over this period, dropping from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr59\/nvsr59_01.pdf\">1.04 million<\/a> to 1.01
