Amid these new allegations, here are some fast facts about how Americans view Russia and its leader, Vladimir Putin, based on previously published Pew Research Center surveys:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Around seven-in-ten Americans (72%) say it is very or somewhat likely that Russia or other foreign governments <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/02\/12\/large-majority-of-americans-expect-that-foreign-governments-will-try-to-influence-the-2020-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will try to influence the November 2020 election<\/a>. Far more Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (84%) than Republicans and Republicans leaners (59%) expect foreign interference in the election. Among those who see interference as likely, 82% of Democrats say it is a major problem; only 39% of Republicans say the same.<\/li>\n<li>The share of Americans with a positive view of Russia is <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/02\/07\/russia-and-putin-receive-low-ratings-globally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at its lowest point in a decade<\/a>. Just 18% have a favorable impression, far lower than the 44% who viewed Russia positively in 2007, when the question was first asked.<\/li>\n<p>[callout align=&#8221;alignright&#8221;]<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"http:\/\/pewresearch.org\/election-2020-newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-306932\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/PRC_20_01_17_election_2020_newsletter_promo_wide.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"173\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<h4>Want to keep up with trends shaping the 2020 U.S. presidential election?<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pewresearch.org\/election-2020-newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sign up to receive our monthly newsletter.<\/a><\/p><li>Just <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/02\/07\/russia-and-putin-receive-low-ratings-globally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">20% of the U.S. public<\/a> has confidence in Putin to do the right thing regarding world affairs; 73% have no confidence. While Putin engenders relatively low confidence among members of both parties, a larger share of Republicans (31%) than Democrats (10%) express confidence in him. The partisan gap in views of Putin is now the largest measured by Pew Research Center.<\/li>\n<li>Last year, half of Americans said that Russia\u2019s power and influence <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2019\/07\/30\/climate-change-and-russia-are-partisan-flashpoints-in-publics-views-of-global-threats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posed a major threat<\/a> to the well-being of the U.S. These opinions, like many about Russia, also were sharply divided along partisan lines. Nearly two-thirds of Democrats (65%) said Russia was a major threat, compared with 35% of Republicans.<\/li>\n<li>Partisans also differ over Russia\u2019s involvement in the <em>last <\/em>presidential election. In 2018, 43% of Americans said Russia\u2019s efforts to influence the 2016 election <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2018\/03\/15\/public-confidence-in-muellers-investigation-remains-steady\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">benefited Trump\u2019s campaign<\/a>, while just 4% said they benefited Hillary Clinton\u2019s campaign and 48% said they benefited neither campaign. Nearly three-quarters of Democrats (74%) said Russia\u2019s efforts helped Trump\u2019s campaign, while a nearly identical share of Republicans (75%) said neither campaign
