The lawsuit argued Meta knowingly contributed to social media addiction and harmed children. Meanwhile, in a separate case,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/08\/21\/doj-tiktok-biden-lawsuit-settlement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TikTok agreed to pay $400 million<\/a>\u00a0over a federal government lawsuit alleging violations of child safety and privacy laws.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The platforms at the center of these debates are widely used by U.S. teens: More than half of those ages 13 to 17 use TikTok (61%) and Instagram (55%) daily, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2025\/12\/09\/teens-social-media-and-ai-chatbots-2025\/#frequency-of-online-platform-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 2025 Pew Research Center survey<\/a>. This includes\u00a0<strong>21% who\u00a0said\u00a0they\u00a0use TikTok \u201calmost constantly\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>and 12% who\u00a0reported\u00a0the same about Instagram.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2025\/04\/22\/teens-social-media-and-mental-health\/#teens-views-of-and-experiences-on-social-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 Center survey of teens<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>48% said social media has a mostly negative effect on people their age,<\/strong>\u00a0up from 32% in 2022. And\u00a0<strong>45% said they spend too much time on social media.\u00a0<\/strong>At the same time, many teens also see benefits from using these platforms. And some <strong>schools have started incorporating<\/strong>\u202f<strong>AI literacy into their curriculums<\/strong> in hopes of teaching students how to use the technology safely and effectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2025\/12\/09\/teens-social-media-and-ai-chatbots-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last fall<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>a<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>majority of\u00a0U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 (64%) said they were using AI chatbots,\u00a0<\/strong>including more than half who had used chatbots to search for information<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(57%) or get help with schoolwork (54%).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About a quarter of all teens (26%) said they were extremely or very <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2026\/02\/24\/how-teens-use-and-view-ai\/#ai-literacy-confidence-and-awareness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confident in their ability to use AI chatbots<\/a>, while 31% were somewhat confident and 7% were not too or not at all confident.
