The FCC is also investigating whether <strong>The View <\/strong>\u2013 one of the network\u2019s flagship shows \u2013 has violated the so-called <strong>equal time rule,<\/strong> which requires broadcast programs to give the same amount of airtime to opposing candidates for public office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/07\/05\/2026\/the-view-throttles-back-political-candidate-bookings-following-fcc-inquiry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent analysis by Semafor<\/a> found that since the investigation was announced, The View has not featured any guests who are candidates in a competitive midterm race. At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/07\/business\/media\/the-view-abc-fcc-investigation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC maintains<\/a> that the FCC has long deemed The View a \u201cbona fide news program,\u201d which exempts it from the equal time rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There is not a one-size-fits-all answer to how Americans define \u201cnews\u201d<\/strong> these days, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2025\/05\/13\/what-is-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2025 Pew Research Center study<\/a>. Several attributes of information \u2013 including its <strong>topic<\/strong> and <strong>source<\/strong> \u2013 and <strong>people\u2019s own identities and attitudes<\/strong> play a role in how they determine (knowingly or not) whether something counts as news to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"new-from-pew-research-center\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#2a2a2a;font-family:Georgia, serif;font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.455), 18px);\">\ud83d\udea8 <strong>New from Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week, we published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2026\/07\/a-quiet-shift-in-how-americans-perceive-local-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new analysis in Nieman Lab<\/a> about the <strong>shifts we\u2019ve observed in how Americans view local news, <\/strong>based on <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/local-news-fact-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data from the Pew-Knight Initiative<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While local news organizations have long been trusted by majorities of both Republicans and Democrats, this may be starting to change. But some people also express <strong>concerns about the accuracy of information <\/strong>that chatbots provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans are wary about AI\u2019s role in elections: <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2026\/03\/12\/key-findings-about-how-americans-view-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In a 2024 survey<\/a>, 51% predicted AI would have a negative impact on U.S. elections in the next 20 years, while 9% said AI would impact elections positively. An additional 17% expected the impact would be equally positive and negative, and 23% said they weren\u2019t sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"chart-of-the-week\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#2a2a2a;font-family:Georgia, serif;font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.455), 18px);\">\ud83d\udcca <strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week\u2019s chart comes from a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2026\/07\/01\/majority-of-americans-support-banning-social-media-for-kids-under-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new Center analysis<\/a> of <strong>Americans\u2019 views on social media bans for kids under 16, <\/strong>as recently proposed or enacted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/15\/world\/europe\/social-media-bans-worldwide.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.K., Australia and elsewhere<\/a>. A majority of U.S. adults (56%) support this idea, while 21% oppose it.
