According to Stewart Bainum Jr., the former hotel and health care executive who launched the Banner, Cohn will be charged with creating a sustainable business model for the outlet, which now has about 75 journalists in its newsroom and plans to expand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nonprofit digital news outlets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2023\/05\/there-are-more-nonprofit-digital-newsrooms-but-the-pace-of-growth-has-slowed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appear to be on the rise<\/a> nationally. This was evident in our <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/04\/29\/nonprofit-news-outlets-are-playing-a-growing-role-in-statehouse-coverage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 analysis of statehouse reporters in the United States<\/a>, which found that the number of nonprofit news reporters who cover state capitols has nearly quadrupled since 2014. These reporters now make up 20% of the nation\u2019s total statehouse press corps, up from 6% eight years before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"under-the-radar\">\ud83d\udccc&nbsp;<strong>In other news<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Journalists at <strong>The Dallas Morning News<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/media\/2023\/12\/20\/dallas-morning-news-miles-moffeit-john-creuzot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">allege a \u201cculture of fear\u201d<\/a> in the months following a reporter\u2019s sudden departure from the outlet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Internal messages<\/strong> show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/dec\/19\/tiktok-users-including-russell-brand-given-special-status-messages-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TikTok uses different moderation standards<\/a> for \u201ctop creators,\u201d including figures like Russell Brand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Egyptian press syndicate <\/strong>comes \u201cback to life\u201d to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2023\/12\/17\/egypts-press-syndicate-returns-back-to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defend journalists\u2019 rights<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How&nbsp;<strong>incarcerated journalists and editors<\/strong>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/dec\/17\/incarcerated-journalists-san-quentin-podcasts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">using podcasts to report on prisons<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Polish government<\/strong> dismisses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/polish-public-media-chiefs-dismissed-news-channel-stops-broadcasting-2023-12-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">management of public news agencies<\/a>, takes 24-hour news channel off air<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mother Jones<\/strong> plans to merge with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/14\/business\/media\/mother-jones-merger.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Investigative Reporting<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"looking-ahead\">\ud83d\udcc5&nbsp;<strong>Looking ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Parler<\/strong>, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/1\/9\/22221730\/apple-removes-suspends-bans-parler-app-store\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">removed from Apple\u2019s and Google\u2019s app stores<\/a> after being used to help organize the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, has been sold again and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/parler-app-relaunch-2024-new-ownership-download-trump-rcna130287\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">planning to relaunch<\/a> ahead of the 2024 election.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time of a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/10\/20\/fast-facts-about-parler-as-kanye-west-reportedly-plans-acquisition-of-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 Pew Research Center survey<\/a>, 38% of U.S. adults had heard of Parler, but only 1% of Americans reported regularly getting news from the platform. Among regular news consumers on Parler, 66% said news on Parler <strong>helped them better understand current events<\/strong>, and 69% said they <strong>expected the news there to be mostly accurate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"chart-of-the-week\">\ud83d\udcca&nbsp;<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today&#8217;s chart comes from a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/04\/29\/nonprofit-news-outlets-are-playing-a-growing-role-in-statehouse-coverage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 analysis of statehouse reporters at nonprofit news outlets<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This analysis identified 80 nonprofit news outlets that covered U.S. statehouses in 2022. Of these, <strong>nearly half (39) were founded within the last five years<\/strong>.
