Reporters have noted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/07\/04\/biden-media-interviews-press-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lack of transparency and access<\/a> from the administration as the president faces concerns about his age and mental sharpness, while the White House reportedly feels that journalists are too fixated on the issue. Meanwhile, others have wondered whether the press should have been <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-media-condition-late-b8f568526dda9a66f2af9806903e76fa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">focused on this story sooner<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>U.S. journalists are more likely than Americans as a whole to say that news organizations do a good job at serving as a watchdog over elected leaders.<\/strong> About half of journalists (52%) said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2022\/06\/14\/journalists-sense-turmoil-in-their-industry-amid-continued-passion-for-their-work\/#:~:text=Journalists%20and%20the%20public%20far%20apart%20on%20their%20assessment%20of%20today%E2%80%99s%20news%20industry%C2%A0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 Center survey<\/a> that news organizations do a very or somewhat good job at this, while about three-in-ten U.S. adults (29%) said the same that year. A court order requires the investigative reporter and her editor to reveal confidential sources from their investigation, but the journalists have declined to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A large majority of Americans see press freedoms as highly important to the well-being of society, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/04\/23\/most-americans-say-a-free-press-is-highly-important-to-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 Pew Research Center survey<\/a>. However, many express concerns about potential restrictions on press freedoms \u2013 67% say the media are not completely free to report the news in the U.S.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In another <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/05\/02\/most-u-s-journalists-are-concerned-about-press-freedoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center survey<\/a> of nearly 12,000 working U.S.-based journalists conducted in 2022, eight-in-ten journalists said they are at least somewhat concerned about potential restrictions on press freedoms in the U.S., including 57% who are extremely or very concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcca\u00a0<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week\u2019s chart, from a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/07\/11\/amid-doubts-about-bidens-mental-sharpness-trump-leads-presidential-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new Center report<\/a> about Americans\u2019 views toward the 2024 presidential election, looks at how closely voters are following news about the election compared with this time in previous cycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A third of registered voters say they&#8217;re currently following election news very closely.
