His post on X (formerly Twitter) has gotten\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2024\/07\/21\/elon-musk-biden-x-instagram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">particular attention<\/a>\u00a0as an example of public figures choosing social media as a way to bypass the media and directly share news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A majority of X users (65%) say getting news is a reason they use the site,<\/strong> making it the only social media platform out of four we <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/06\/12\/how-americans-get-news-on-tiktok-x-facebook-and-instagram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">studied in detail this year<\/a> where that is the case. Similarly, 59% of X users say <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2024\/06\/12\/how-americans-navigate-politics-on-tiktok-x-facebook-and-instagram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keeping up with politics or political issues<\/a> is a reason they use X \u2013 again much higher than the shares of users who say this about TikTok, Facebook or Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, <strong>X stands out as a place to see breaking news:<\/strong> 75% of users say they ever see information about breaking news in real time there, compared with smaller shares of users on Facebook (58%), TikTok (55%) and Instagram (44%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udea8 <strong>New from Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new Pew Research Center report looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/07\/24\/how-americans-get-local-political-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how Americans get news and information about local government and politics<\/a>. Key findings include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li><strong>Most Americans are interested in news and information about local government and politics.<\/strong> About two-thirds say they often or sometimes get local political news.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Among these local political news consumers, <strong>only a quarter are highly satisfied with the quality of coverage.<\/strong> And fewer than half of Americans overall say it is easy to find the information they need to make voting decisions in local elections.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>There is virtually <strong>no difference between Democrats and Republicans<\/strong> when it comes to their consumption of and attitudes toward local political news.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/07\/24\/how-americans-get-local-political-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This report<\/a>, the second in a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/05\/07\/americans-changing-relationship-with-local-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">series focused on local news<\/a>, is part of the Pew-Knight Initiative, a research program funded jointly by The Pew Charitable Trusts and the John S. and James L. Technology has already changed the way the event is covered, as NBC now uses its subscription streaming service, Peacock, and other digital platforms to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscaststudio.com\/2024\/07\/24\/inside-nbcs-paris-olympics-coverage-plan-live-sports-city-scenery-and-gen-z-appeal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">supplement coverage on NBC and other TV networks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Americans increasingly rely on digital paths to get news.<\/strong> Most U.S. adults (58%) now prefer to get news in general from digital devices such as smartphones, computers or tablets, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/news-platform-fact-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 Center survey<\/a>. The portion of Americans who prefer to get their news from TV has dropped to 27%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Back in 2012, television was the leading platform for coverage of the London Olympics,<\/strong> according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2012\/08\/06\/eight-in-ten-following-olympics-on-tv-or-digitally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center study conducted that year<\/a>. Nearly three-quarters of U.S. adults (73%) said they watched coverage of the 2012 Olympics on television, compared with just 17% who said they had watched online or digitally. And 12% reported that they had followed Olympic coverage on social networking sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcca\u00a0<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week&#8217;s chart, from our <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/07\/24\/how-americans-get-local-political-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent report on Americans&#8217; experiences with local political news<\/a>, looks at the connection between community attachment and perceptions of news about local government and politics.
