Durov was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/28\/tech\/pavel-durov-telegram-custody-released-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released from custody<\/a> Wednesday but is facing <strong>allegations that Telegram was used for illegal activities<\/strong> such as drug trafficking, child pornography and even terrorism. The arrest has sparked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/25\/technology\/pavel-durov-telegram-detained-france.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">debate about content moderation<\/a> and whether tech companies are responsible for the content posted on their platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most Americans (71%) <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/07\/20\/most-americans-favor-restrictions-on-false-information-violent-content-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said last year<\/a> that <strong>tech companies should take steps to restrict extremely violent content online,<\/strong> even if it limits freedom of information. Telegram identifies itself as a platform for <strong>free speech,<\/strong> according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2022\/10\/06\/the-role-of-alternative-social-media-in-the-news-and-information-environment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 Pew Research Center study<\/a> of seven alternative social media platforms. At the time, we found that 27% of U.S. adults had heard of Telegram, and 2% said they regularly got news on the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/12\/16\/key-facts-about-telegram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">key findings about Telegram<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udea8 <strong>New from Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crime has long been a major area of focus in local news coverage. <strong>More Americans get news and information about crime than any other local topic<\/strong> except the weather, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/08\/29\/americans-experiences-with-local-crime-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new Pew Research Center report<\/a>. Among the key findings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li>Most Americans turn to <strong>friends, family and neighbors<\/strong> and to <strong>local news outlets<\/strong> for local crime information.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Views of local crime news quality vary depending on <strong>where people are getting it.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n<li>Most U.S. adults say they are interested in several types of local crime coverage, but <strong>far fewer say information on each is easy to find.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n<li>Americans who consume local crime news most often are the most likely to say <strong>they are concerned about crime in their community<\/strong> affecting them or their family.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This report, the third in a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/pew-knight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">series focused on local news<\/a>, is part of the Pew-Knight Initiative, a research program funded jointly by The Pew Charitable Trusts and the John S. and James L. Democrats also were much more likely to personally use CNN as a news source: Roughly half (53%) said that they got political and election news from CNN in the week before the survey, versus 24% of Republicans.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcca\u00a0<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week\u2019s chart is from a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/08\/29\/americans-experiences-with-local-crime-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new Center study<\/a> on how Americans get local crime news. <strong>About three-quarters of U.S. adults or more say they are at least somewhat interested in several types of local crime coverage, but far fewer say it is easy to find news and information about each topic.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, most Americans (85%) say they are at least somewhat interested in what local officials are doing to address crime.
