The decision, which comes amid a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brazil-musk-x-twitter-moraes-bef06c0dbbb8ed87495b1afbb0edf211\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">longer debate over misinformation and free speech<\/a> on X, was upheld by a Brazilian Supreme Court panel on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vast majority of Brazilians (86%) said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/02\/05\/8-charts-on-technology-use-around-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 survey<\/a> that they use social media sites, including 97% of those ages 18 to 39. But\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/03\/22\/whatsapp-and-facebook-dominate-the-social-media-landscape-in-middle-income-nations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the survey<\/a>, which was conducted in 2023 before Musk rebranded Twitter as X, Twitter was less popular in Brazil than other social media platforms. <strong>Just<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>22% of Brazilians said they used Twitter that year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udea8 <strong>New from Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As public support for a TikTok ban continues to decline, many U.S. adults are skeptical or unsure such a ban will happen, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/09\/05\/support-for-a-us-tiktok-ban-continues-to-decline-and-half-of-adults-doubt-it-will-happen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a new Pew Research Center survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The share of Americans who <strong>support the U.S.\u00a0government banning TikTok<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>has fallen to 32% today, <\/strong>down from 38% in fall 2023.\u00a0Support for a ban was much higher in March 2023 (50%).<br>\u00a0<br>Meanwhile, <strong>28% of Americans now<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>oppose a ban,<\/strong> up from 22% in March 2023. And the share who say they are uncertain whether the government should ban the platform is now 39%, up from 28% in March 2023. Half of Americans think it\u2019s\u00a0very or somewhat\u00a0<em>unlikely\u00a0<\/em>that TikTok will be banned in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These findings come as TikTok\u2019s fate in the country remains unclear. Gavin Newsom recently announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/newsletter\/2024-08-30\/california-struck-a-deal-with-google-to-fund-local-journalism-journalists-arent-happy-about-it-essential-california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$250 million partnership with Google<\/a> to help fund local newsrooms. The deal replaces a proposed bill that would require a fee from Big Tech companies to support journalism. Some California reporters are questioning the new agreement, which still needs to be approved by the state legislature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/05\/07\/americans-changing-relationship-with-local-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our 2024 survey on Americans\u2019 experiences with local news<\/a>, we found that <strong>a large majority of Americans (85%) say local news outlets are at least somewhat important to the well-being of their local community.<\/strong> This includes 44% who say local journalism is extremely or very important to their community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, a relatively small share of Americans (15%) say they have paid for local news in the last year.
