Eugene Daniels, president of the White House Correspondents\u2019 Association, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/26\/us\/politics\/trump-white-house-press-policy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">responded to the announcement<\/a> by saying the organization will no longer distribute reporting from the White House\u2019s selected press pool.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/12\/02\/most-americans-continue-to-say-media-scrutiny-keeps-politicians-from-doing-things-they-shouldnt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Pew Research Center survey<\/a> conducted two months before the 2024 U.S. presidential election, <strong>74% of Americans said criticism from news organizations keeps political leaders from doing things that shouldn\u2019t be done,<\/strong> while far fewer (24%) said this type of scrutiny keeps leaders from doing their job. The changes led to the departure of opinion editor David Shipley.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last fall,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/10\/10\/where-americans-turn-for-election-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a Pew Research Center survey<\/a>\u00a0looked at Americans\u2019 political news consumption ahead of the 2024 election. At that time,\u00a0<strong>about a third of Americans (32%) said that The Washington Post was at least a minor source of political and election news for them.<\/strong>\u00a0A much larger share of Democrats and Democratic-leading independents (45%) than Republicans and GOP leaners (22%) said they use the Post as a source of political news.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcca\u00a0<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week\u2019s chart comes from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/02\/06\/how-news-influencers-talked-about-trump-and-harris-during-the-2024-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our recent analysis<\/a>\u00a0of the social media posts made by news influencers in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election.\u00a0<br><br>Across five major social media sites analyzed,\u00a0<strong>most posts by news influencers that mentioned either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris were posted on X,<\/strong> formerly known as Twitter (79%). No other site produced more than 10% of posts by news influencers about either candidate.
