Kennedy Jr., the recently confirmed secretary of Health and Human Services, has offered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-measles-vaccine-deadly-texas-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some public comments<\/a>\u00a0in support of the vaccine used to prevent the disease, but he has long expressed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/measles-texas-rfk-jr-response-vaccines-doctors-wary-rcna194510\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">skepticism about the effects of vaccines<\/a>\u00a0and has also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/04\/health\/texas-measles-outbreak-kennedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suggested alternative methods to treating measles<\/a>. People have also encountered false or misleading\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/the-monitor\/race-based-vaccine-myths-spread-amid-measles-outbreaks-the-monitor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">race-based narratives<\/a>\u00a0surrounding the outbreak.\u00a0<br><br>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2025\/02\/12\/5-years-later-america-looks-back-at-the-impact-of-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent Pew Research Center report<\/a>\u00a0that looked back on the COVID-19 pandemic after five years found that overall, 60% of U.S. adults are at least somewhat <strong>confident that they would be able to find accurate information in the event of a new health emergency.<\/strong> While about three-quarters of Democrats (74%) say they are confident they could do this, just under half of Republicans (46%) agree.\u00a0<br><br>Republicans also are less likely than Democrats to <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/10\/16\/republicans-young-adults-now-nearly-as-likely-to-trust-info-from-social-media-as-from-national-news-outlets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trust information from national news organizations<\/a>, and at the time the survey was conducted in October 2024, they were much more likely to say that public health officials had exaggerated the risks of COVID-19.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udccc\u00a0<strong>In other news<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li><strong>More than 75,000 cancel subscriptions to Washington Post<\/strong> after Bezos\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/02\/28\/nx-s1-5312819\/washington-post-bezos-subscriptions-cancellations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">changes opinion pages<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Portland, Oregon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2025\/03\/05\/portland-settles-claims-police-force\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">settles lawsuit<\/a> over <strong>police force against journalists<\/strong> covering 2020 protests\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/europe-sees-rise-in-disinformation-attacks-on-media-report\/a-71833892\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Report shows<\/a> rise in <strong>attacks on journalists in Europe<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Digg,<\/strong> an early web discussion platform for news, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/05\/technology\/digg-alexis-ohanian-kevin-rose.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plans its return<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>ABC News<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2025\/03\/05\/disney-layoffs-abc-news-538\/81596422007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announces layoffs<\/a>, plans to shut down\u00a0<strong>538\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Tom Llamas<\/strong> announced as <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nbc-news-holt-tom-llamas-anchor-6f10948783b35bb9986c3a8287c957f8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new anchor of NBC Nightly News<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Amid concerns over <strong>press freedom,<\/strong> as Sebastopol City Council in California <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressdemocrat.com\/article\/news\/sebastopol-first-amendment-city-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reverses its media policy<\/a> \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Inside the rise of <a href=\"https:\/\/niemanreports.org\/maine-nonprofit-national-trust-for-local-news-press-herald\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local nonprofit news outlets<\/a> in <strong>Maine<\/strong><\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcc5\u00a0<strong>Looking ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Patch<\/strong> has expanded its presence to local communities throughout the United States using <strong>newsletters powered by AI.<\/strong> CEO Warren St. John <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/03\/04\/patch-news-ai-newsletters-local-communities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently told Axios<\/a> that the newsletters are trained to pull news and information from various sources and will list five articles, including headlines, summaries and links.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sources that Americans are turning to for local news have become increasingly digital, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/05\/07\/sources-of-local-news\/#americans-changing-local-news-providers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 Pew Research Center survey<\/a>. While the share of U.S. adults who say they often or sometimes get local news from newsletters or Listservs has stayed relatively stable between 2018 and 2024, <strong>growing shares say they get local news from online forums or groups and other online-only sources.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/03\/26\/many-americans-think-generative-ai-programs-should-credit-the-sources-they-rely-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey from last year<\/a> found that 54% of Americans say artificial intelligence programs that generate text and images need to credit the sources they rely on to produce their responses, compared with just 14% who say the programs don\u2019t need to do this. About a third (32%) say they are not sure.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcca\u00a0<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week\u2019s chart comes from our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/05\/07\/views-of-local-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 survey<\/a>\u00a0on how Americans view local news.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/analysis\/objectivity-wars-event-media-trust.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">debates over traditional journalistic values<\/a>, most Americans (69%) still say that local journalists should remain neutral on issues in their communities.\u00a0However,<strong> about three-in-ten say local journalists should advocate for change in their communities,<\/strong>\u00a0with some demographic groups especially likely to support this view. For instance, 39% of adults ages 18 to 29 say local journalists should advocate for change in the community, compared with 20% of those 65 and older.
