But a spokesperson for <strong>the Department of Homeland Security<\/strong> <strong>said the incident was not politically motivated<\/strong> and that Piker was released after a routine inspection.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We recently asked the 21% of U.S. adults who say they regularly get news from news influencers on social media to name the first such influencer who comes to mind. Piker, and his handle HasanAbi, was among <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/02\/19\/no-consensus-on-who-comes-to-mind-when-americans-are-asked-to-name-a-news-influencer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the most common answers<\/a>. This was part of our broader <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/11\/18\/americas-news-influencers\/#news-influencers-are-mostly-men-more-explicitly-identify-as-right-leaning-than-left-leaning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study of news influencers<\/a>, which found that on the whole, there are fewer news influencers like Piker who explicitly identify with the political left than those who are overtly right-leaning.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udea8 <strong>New from Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2025\/05\/13\/what-is-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew Research Center study<\/a> uses qualitative online discussion boards, a nationally representative survey, and in-depth interviews with journalists to better understand the nuances of defining <strong>what \u201cnews\u201d means to Americans in the digital era.<\/strong> An accompanying <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/decoded\/2025\/05\/13\/how-online-discussion-boards-informed-our-study-of-what-news-means-to-americans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both <strong>CNN<\/strong> and <strong>Fox<\/strong> this week announced new <strong>streaming services<\/strong> set to debut this fall. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/13\/business\/media\/cnn-streaming-service.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNN\u2019s foray into streaming<\/a> will be its second, after CNN+ was launched in 2022 and quickly shuttered after less than a month. Fox plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/12\/fox-one-streaming-service-launch.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">launch its new service<\/a>, to be called Fox One, ahead of the National Football League season this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving toward streaming may be one way for these companies to avoid the revenue declines seen in traditional business models. CNN\u2019s chief executive, Mark Thompson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/23\/business\/media\/cnn-layoffs-mark-thompson.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has said<\/a> that the company\u2019s \u201cfuture prospects will not be good\u201d if CNN does not follow its audiences to the new platforms they are using.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Audiences are largely getting news from digital platforms.<\/strong> Digital devices are by far the most common way Americans get news, with a large majority of U.S. adults (86%) saying they at least sometimes get news from a digital device, and more than half (58%) saying they prefer this way of getting news over any other. Meanwhile, 63% say they get news from television at least sometimes, while just 32% prefer TV, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/news-platform-fact-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 Pew Research Center survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcca\u00a0<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week, our chart comes from our <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2025\/05\/13\/what-is-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new study<\/a> on how Americans define news. U.S. adults are most likely to say that whether something is factual (85%) or up to date (78%) is a major factor in thinking about whether it counts as news, according to the nationally representative survey portion of the study.
