While a spokesman said the president is holding \u201cthe fake news media accountable,\u201d critics of the settlement have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/07\/02\/paramount-settlement-press-freedom-00437677\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attacked Paramount<\/a> for not pushing back against what they call a frivolous lawsuit.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As is the case for other TV networks, there is a wide partisan gap in the share of Americans who say they use and trust CBS News, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/feature\/news-media-tracker\/cbs_news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent Pew Research Center study<\/a> that looked at 30 major news sources. While more than half of Democrats (56%) trust CBS News as a source of news, 23% of Republicans say the same.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lawsuit saga has not only raised concerns about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/what-paramounts-multi-million-dollar-settlement-with-trump-means-for-press-freedom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">state of press freedom<\/a> in the U.S., but some have questioned the business motivations behind the deal. Paramount is currently awaiting approval from the Federal Communications Commission for a <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/warren-investigation-paramount-trump-settlement-bribery-1236446129\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">merger with Skydance Media<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large majorities of Americans believe U.S. news organizations are at least somewhat influenced by corporations and financial interests (85%) and by the government and political interests (86%), according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/04\/24\/americans-remain-concerned-about-press-freedoms-but-partisan-views-have-flipped-since-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew Research Center survey<\/a> from earlier this year. These shares include over half of Americans who say news organizations are influenced <em>a great deal <\/em>by corporate (55%) and political (57%) interests.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udccc\u00a0<strong>In other news<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li><strong>The San Francisco Standard,<\/strong> co-founded by billionaire Michael Moritz, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/30\/business\/media\/michael-moritz-san-francisco-standard-charter.html?partner=slack&amp;smid=sl-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acquires digital news site<\/a> focused on the <strong>future of work<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Trump <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-lawsuit-iowa-poll-ann-selzer-des-moines-register-kamala-harris-rcna216078\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moves lawsuit<\/a> against Iowa pollster and <strong>The Des Moines Register <\/strong>to state court&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Trump administration<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/27\/us\/politics\/trump-voa-layoffs-errors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rescinds layoffs<\/a> at <strong>Voice of America<\/strong> after notice errors, but will attempt again&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Media figures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2025\/jul\/02\/more-than-400-media-figures-urge-bbc-board-to-remove-robbie-gibb-over-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">call for removal<\/a> of <strong>BBC <\/strong>board member, claiming conflict of interest in <strong>Gaza <\/strong>reporting&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Spanish-language journalist<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/journalist-detained-immigration-ice-mario-guevara-atlanta-81fa79341c3b910db9b200d214f708f8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">granted bond<\/a> after being arrested while covering protest near Atlanta&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>X <\/strong>launches <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/696210\/x-community-notes-ai-note-writers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cAI Note Writers\u201d<\/a> for Community Notes&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>International journalist launches <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ferguson-journalism-startup-video-news-2fbf68c367a34aac503cbb122b33d272\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Substack-like journalism platform<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcc5\u00a0<strong>Looking ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The major budget bill championed by the president and his GOP allies has passed Congress, but not before the Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/01\/tech\/senate-strikes-ai-regulation-moratorium-agenda-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly unanimously removed a provision<\/a> that <strong>would have prevented states from enforcing their own regulations on artificial intelligence for 10 years.<\/strong> While tech leaders and interest groups have argued that a patchwork of state regulations would slow technological development, the sponsors of the amendment worried that the moratorium would prevent companies from being held accountable for the potential harmful effects of AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both U.S. adults and AI experts who we <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2025\/04\/03\/how-the-us-public-and-ai-experts-view-artificial-intelligence\/#regulation-and-responsible-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">surveyed last year<\/a> are much more likely to express <strong>concern that the U.S. will not go far enough in regulating AI use<\/strong> than they are to worry regulations will go too far.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This debate comes at a time when news publishers are <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/07\/02\/chatgpt-referrals-to-news-sites-are-growing-but-not-enough-to-offset-search-declines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seeing increased referrals<\/a> to their sites from AI chatbots like ChatGPT. Americans are pessimistic about the technology\u2019s long-term <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/04\/28\/americans-largely-foresee-ai-having-negative-effects-on-news-journalists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">effect on news and the journalism profession<\/a>. Roughly half of U.S. adults say AI will have a <strong>very (24%) or somewhat (26%) negative impact on the news people get<\/strong> in the U.S. over the next 20 years, while just 10% say it\u2019ll have a positive effect.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcca\u00a0<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week\u2019s chart comes from the Center\u2019s\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/07\/01\/83-of-us-adults-use-streaming-services-far-fewer-subscribe-to-cable-or-satellite-tv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new survey<\/a>\u202fon how Americans use streaming services and TV subscriptions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Most U.S. adults (83%) report using streaming services like Netflix, Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video,\u202f<\/strong>with 55% saying they use these services\u202fand <em>do not\u202f<\/em>subscribe\u202fto cable or satellite TV.
