Several other major TV networks joined Fox News in issuing a statement condemning the new rules as a threat to the free press. And most other outlets credentialed to cover the Pentagon \u2013 including Newsmax, The Washington Times and The Daily Caller \u2013 turned in their press passes rather than complying with the policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A majority of Americans have long said that criticism from news organizations keeps political leaders from doing things that shouldn\u2019t be done. In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/12\/02\/most-americans-continue-to-say-media-scrutiny-keeps-politicians-from-doing-things-they-shouldnt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 Pew Research Center survey<\/a>, 74% of U.S. adults <strong>affirmed this so-called \u201cwatchdog role\u201d for the media.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many Americans also expressed similar views in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2025\/08\/20\/what-do-americans-want-from-their-news-providers\/#what-roles-do-americans-expect-their-news-providers-to-fulfill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025 survey<\/a>. About seven-in-ten U.S. adults say the people they get news from should definitely (41%) or probably (31%) keep an eye on powerful people. Three-in-ten Americans say they get at least sometimes from email newsletters, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/news-platform-fact-sheet\/#who-uses-each-news-platform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent Center survey<\/a>, including 6% who say they do so often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, 1440 is <a href=\"https:\/\/digiday.com\/media\/why-1440-is-evolving-from-a-newsletter-company-to-a-destination-of-explainers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adding a growing collection of news explainers<\/a> on topics it thinks readers want to know more about. Its CEO, Tim Huelskamp, praised the work of journalists doing original reporting, but also said that \u201cno one can find\u201d their stories and that \u201csomeone needs to be the connective tissue in the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans are split on whether people who do that kind of news curation are \u201cjournalists,\u201d reflecting broader uncertainty about what the term means in the digital era. Four-in-ten U.S. adults say they do\u00a0<em>not\u00a0<\/em>consider someone who primarily compiles and shares other people\u2019s reporting on current events to be a journalist, while 36% they do <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2025\/08\/20\/what-makes-someone-a-journalist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">think of that person as a journalist<\/a>. An additional 23% say they aren\u2019t sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opinions are also divided on whether someone who writes their own newsletter about news is a journalist, although the balance tilts slightly in the other direction, with more Americans saying that person is a journalist (40%) than isn\u2019t (34%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcca\u00a0<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week\u2019s chart looks at a shift in views: More Republicans now say calling people out on social media represents accountability. A majority of U.S. adults (56%) say that those who call out others on social media for posts that might be considered offensive are mainly holding people accountable for their actions, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/10\/15\/in-a-shift-more-republicans-now-say-calling-people-out-on-social-media-represents-accountability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a September Center survey<\/a>. A smaller share (40%) say those who do this are more likely to punish people who don\u2019t deserve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both in 2022 and 2020, Democrats were more likely than Republicans to see users posting these callouts as mainly holding people accountable.
