This content will be freely available in the United Kingdom and will include ads if viewed elsewhere around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the United\u00a0States, <strong>YouTube is an increasingly common destination for news,<\/strong> according to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/social-media-and-news-fact-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew Research Center survey<\/a>. This comes after an August 2024 agreement between <strong>California and Google to\u00a0spend $175 million<\/strong> over five years to fund local journalism \u2013 replacing legislation that would have\u202fforced Google\u202fto pay news organizations\u00a0for using their\u00a0content. Newsom cited budgetary constraints in <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2025\/05\/google-california-news-outlets-journalism\/\">cutting the state\u2019s commitment<\/a>\u00a0to the <strong>California Civic Media Fund<\/strong>\u00a0from $30 million to $10 million for fiscal year 2025-26.\u00a0Google later said it was matching the state\u2019s $10 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/05\/07\/americans-views-on-the-financial-health-of-local-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 Pew Research Center survey<\/a>, <strong>15% of Americans said they paid for local news<\/strong> in the last year \u2013 whether through subscribing,\u00a0donating\u00a0or becoming a member \u2013 while 85% said they had not. Among those who\u00a0hadn\u2019t\u00a0paid for local news in the last year,\u00a0roughly half\u00a0(49%) said the main reason was that they can find plenty of free local news.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In\u00a0that same survey, we found that\u00a0a majority of\u00a0U.S. adults (63%) said they think their local news outlets are doing at least\u00a0somewhat well\u00a0financially, down from 71% in 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcca\u00a0<strong>Chart of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week\u2019s chart comes from an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/10\/01\/americans-have-mixed-feelings-about-ai-summaries-in-search-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">August 2025 Pew Research Center survey<\/a>.
